Very nice, but were there girls wearing yukata there? Fireworks without girls wearing yukata is like breakfast without orange juice.

No one does fireworks better than the Japanese. I miss hanabi.

That's an awesome shot. It's not easy taking pics of fireworks. Hanabi season is awesome.

Oh, it was last week! Kaiko Kinen Hanabi is always over before I even start thinking of fireworks.

See you all at the Kanagawashinbun Hanabi on Aug. 1st!

These fireworks are very expensive toys. Their biggest use is to make girls feel romantic and later get laid. It also is very polluting. Shouldn't be this common everywhere. I heard in Kitakyushu they once got 1 oku yen to spend for the city and they decided they should have the biggest fireworks of all! They spent it like that.

In my home-country there has been a drive NOT to use fireworks at New-Year as it is a waste of money and could be better spend on charities, etc. Not a new drive been going for a few decades now.

Said that seeing a nice fire-work/hanabi is fun and brightens the day.

Anyway, I just happened to be on the Wangan expressway that evening and I saw the fireworks going on and I was like...wow! Kept wondering if they have changed the dates for the Hannabi usually held twice a year. Nice shot.

That is in incredibly clear shot but have to say it is wasteful given the state of Japans economy.

very beautiful. I prefer the hanabi events to be held before the deadly summer heat has started.then we can ejoy the beauty of the fireworks without being drown in humidity and heat.

dishdash, maybe we should get rid of every festival because it's "wasteful"

I don't see any problem with this, unless of course if you're not one of the people getting any, in which case I could understand your dislike of fireworks.

From what i could find about them, fireworks are not pollutants technically speaking.. their components break down very quickly and so the only potentially adverse effect on the ecosystem comes from how it may startle and scare animals during the short time of the shows. Fireworks are so beautiful.. and so simple.. i cannot see a serious argument for not having them! ^_^ Living here where i do in America now.. they have fireworks only 1 time each year during their Independence Day celebration.. and if it was only that, then it would be wonderful! But sadly there is so many many people here who own their own firearms and who buy fireworks for their own shows, but then do not have enough patience to wait for the event.. so here during the whole 2 weeks that fireworks are for sale prior to the celebration, the days and nights are filled with the sound of explosions as well as gunfire o_0 It is just not at all the same.

That is a stunning picture....well done!

Wouldn't have been nice to hear about it before so we could have seen it for ourself.

Bicultural that is being silly....no one wants to ruin a great party and no one is saying get rid of all Hanabis but Japan's economy has some serious problems...they can still have Hanabi but maybe every second year.

Great photo!

I really wish that they had fireworks shows during winter in the Tokyo area as the air is so much clearer than the summer.

Once again... great photo!

taking a reasonable photo is not too hard if you just use the "firework" setting on your compact camera. My photos came out rather nice. If you have a reflex camera + tripod than all the better or you could just recor it in

If just 100,000 people came and spend 500yen on drinks and food it would bring 50 million yen for the community. The August fireworks used to bring some 6 million to come and watch so I think it pays for itself while bringing people together to share an hour of splendor.

Looks great but after a few minutes it gets boring, being in a cramped space doesn't help either, and I'd rather listen to some music in sync with the fireworks than the silly oooohhhs and aaaahhhhs.

actually... before we jump into conclusion to say this is a wasteful move, why not think further? there are tourist who would travel to japan during their hanabi fest to soak into the atmosphere.. this could be part of their tourist-drawing event. the same goes for Hong Kong vibrantly lit up city... many people see it as waste of energy, but Hong Kong depends partly of this to draw in the tourist to see its beautiful night lights..

A waste? What could be wasteful about fireworks? Would you rather have the municipalities spend that money on more concrete?

I'll never understand people who can't just enjoy something so beautiful. Not happy unless you're complaining?

NOw a few commenters are starting to 'get it' ne? Fireworks and festivities bring tourists with their money! Festivities also give reasons just to feel a bit better.. to not give up on hoping.. even in the worst situation you can say.. i lived this far.. Fireworks are just good on many levels for the individual AND the community.
