Frozen beer

Women drink cups of Kirin's frozen beer at a beer garden in Tokyo on Tuesday. While Japan struggles to generate enough electricity to keep air conditioners humming through its steamy summer, brewer Kirin is offering relief - a pint of ice cold draft beer topped with frozen froth. See story here.

I'd check to see if that's really beer or just "near beer." Normally, if you freeze beer, the water and alcohol separate because they have different freezing points just as if you boil/cook with liquor, the alcohol evaporates long before the water.

The machine they use froths the beer, drops the temperature way below that of the beer in the mug. Then it gets dispensed on top of the beer like soft-serve ice cream.

Sounds fun, I bet it would go good with some takoyaki. I dont know but I would try anything once. kampai!

Sign me up! If I knew which beer gardens in my area had one of these machines, I would go out of my way to go there. =)

I am from one of the hottest parts of all Mexico, summer means of 50 degrees celcius, I guess maybe about 130 degrees Farenheit?? Anyway, in my part of Mexico we LOVE COLD BEER and cold anything during the horrible summers so this so called Japanese cold beer may not even be cold enough for my part of Mexico, but hey, I want to give it a try here in Japan!! SALUD!! Kanpai!!

This looks like a friggin frappubeercino. looks ridiculous. Please Kirin stop ruining beer.

It gets worse. At the local Mexican restaurant I frequent, Corona Beer has an attachment for their bottles that holds the bottle upside-down in a Margarita glass. As the customer empties the margarita to the point where the mouth of the Corona bottle is exposed, the bottle starts emptying into the margarita glass.

looks like a cute drink xD

Looks ok for a quick drinkie while out, no harm to it and a talking point i guess.

OK, it's a gimmick, that's the World we live in. And if you don't like Japanese beer, don't drink it and please stop complaining.

Just out of curiosity - how does freezing more things save electricity?

My guess is that a freezer keeping beer foam frozen and a refrigerator keeping beer cold for say 30 people will use less electric than multiple air conditioners keeping multiple offices cool for those same 30 people spread out over the city. If you can convince those people to stick out a 28 degree office for the reward of a frozen foam topped beer, you have saved a bundle.

"The regular Kirin beer is so bad"

It is not.

Kirin Ichiban Shibareru.

There's a party at the beer garden, and urine..-vited!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

It irks me that every year here, they promote cold alcoholic drinks to combat feeling hot! Drinking alcohol in hot weather, especially in the sun, without hydrating yourself with plenty of water too, is one of the most dangerous things you can do!! If you must drink beer during the day when it's 36C - 45C outside, be sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Trust me, been there, done that, it's not pleasant!!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I thought alcohol can't freeze! Sounds like a nice refreshing drink but the opposite is true. Drinking something ice cold with alcohol on a hot day is dangerous. Consult a physician and see what he/she says.

Can't stand beer but this is a nice photo of a lovely young lady enjoying a cold drink... Another great photo.

Makes a change from a Ned swigging Tennents from a can on a street corner.

Miserable bunch of buggers, some of you lot. The Japanese try something novel and a little different and you all can't wait to pull out your bashing sticks and go to work. Some of you need to have a good long hard look at yourselves and ask why. Seriously. And you might not like the answers.

nice pic, gotta get me some of that frozen froth!! looks delicious thanks to the cute girls!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

excellent pic of cute girls, who cares what it taste like !!

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The beer is not frozen, the foam is.

Thank you. I didn't realize.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

If Kirin want to generate less electricity, why dont they remove all their vending machines that never seem to be used but are chilling / warming and lighting all day long .....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

bicultural, I'm not a fan either, but I drank one last Friday after not having had one for 5 years, and it tasted pretty damned good! It's a good once-in-a-while beer.

For all the critics above, maybe you need to kick back and have a cold one. Chillax!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I think some people are misunderstanding this product. The beer is not frozen, the foam is. By the way I am not a fan of Ichiban shibori. Kirin Lager is much better.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Something cute for the ladies. Drink up!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Oh, yeah. I will tell you something about ice cream. Used to make loads of people sick when it became commonplace. But they kept serving it. Talk about making no sense! Even back then, I doubt frozen beer would have gotten any one sick. That would have been sense.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

That's what I love about Japan, man ... It makes absolutely no sense

You cannot see the sense in having something frozen to lick when its hot?

Yeah, someone probably said the same thing when ice cream became common!

I think freezing will kill remove the carbonation, something that is important to beer. But since I have not eaten it, I will not judge it too harshly.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

As many people are saying: reducing the temp removes some of the nasty taste from these industrial beers. If you need to chill it that far then something is being hidden...

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

It'll probably be better than the ice cold red wine served at most Tokyo restaurants.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

To each their own. I don't think this is mine.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Actually.... that looks good. where's this beer garden? i'm so there!

NetNinjaJun. 06, 2012 - 10:59AM JST That's right people. Drink up. Enjoy an ice cold beer. There is no radiation.

did you know that your Cessium 134 and 137 is extracted from human body with sweat and urine? Beer is the cure.. again!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

nothing more attractive than a cute girl drinking a beer!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Wasnt there an Asahi beer being sold in Ginza the other year at about something-below-zero? I dont know what it tasted like - couldnt be bothered to stand in the hour-long queue for it outside the store, but I did wonder what it was like. Did anyone have it? Was it good?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The colder the beer the better.

Absolutely agree down to 1 degree, but I draw the line at frozen. It just takes the taste away.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

i thought you get an headache after drinking beer, not while drinking it.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

That is an excellent picture of two young ladies enjoying a beer.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

If you do not like it then why do you have to buy and drink?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

I particularly like the way it's served in a thin plastic container so it will start getting warm as soon as you touch it.

But why think? I looks cute so the hordes here will lap it up. Pity Japanese beer tastes like fizzy urine.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Why not?...can't taste any worse than it already does. Industrial Japanese beer and it's lame marketing really is appalling...

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Ice in beer tastes great, I just hate the icecream look.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I love cold beer, but please do not give me any head on it. I am paying for the beer and not air bubbles.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

That's what I love about Japan, man ... It makes absolutely no sense, but who cares if there's something that is crazy enough to catch some attention. Nicely done. I as well don't want to spoil the party!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

I like the ecstatc look on the closer drinker's face.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Not a bad idea for drinking beer in hot weather, especially outside.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

papigiulio Jun. 06, 2012 - 08:44AM JST. Please Kirin stop ruining beer.

The regular Kirin beer is so bad that by freezing their beer, it will diguise the taste and taste less of a manure.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

The colder the beer the better.

2 ( +9 / -8 )

This looks like a friggin frappubeercino. looks ridiculous. Please Kirin stop ruining beer.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Great Idea! I want one.

3 ( +5 / -3 )

What's really funny is Kirin claims this frozen froth keeps the beer cold for 30 minutes, longer than the average 22 minutes it takes to finish it. I would think these women can finish these beers in less than 22 minutes. I know men who wouldn't take much longer than 22 seconds to finish a beer.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

We all know this will be all forgotten about by next year. This years fad will have ended by October.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Nice gimmick and lots of people will fall for it. When beer is too cold it loses all its flavor but why spoil the party.

11 ( +15 / -3 )

And how exactly did Kirin make this without using more electricity?
