I didn't see that. I wish I had. Mars has been bright in the sky the last week or so, and making me think it was Venus until realizing it was in exactly the opposite position from Venus. (Getting my east/west and mornings/evenings confused.)

If you have a pair of binoculars (7X35 or better) tonight you can look at the Moon again and the planet Uranus will be nearby. Planets shine with a 'steady' light. Good luck and fave fun.]

don't worry, planet-Moon conjnction appearances are fairly frequent. You just gotta know when they occur.

Last night the planet Mars was in close conjunction to the Moon. It was quite a sight to see. Did anyone catch that?

I’m pretty sure it’s been edited, if for no other reason than the relative sharpness of the moon vis-a-vis the castle. 

You may be right. I was thinking the fuzzy edge of the moon was simple due to enlargement of the entire picture, and that it was less obvious on the castle because of fewer curves. I wonder if it's possible to calculate the distance from the camera to the castle based on the angle between the front and side edges. How can I persuade my kids it's something they should try to do?

As a photographer, and former ad agency creative director, I can unequivocally say it's impossible to get that size relativity between the moon and the castle without graphic manipulation. But, it's a nice picture. Makes you think twice.

it’s an edited picture. Someone has taken an image of the moon and pasted it over a picture of a castle for dramatic effect.

Are you sure about that? It doesn't look so different from some of the photos at the link below in terms of perspective.

It looks great, but sadly, is not representative of reality.

When I look at the moon rising from my garden, the moon is only a fraction of the size of the trees nearby. But it is many times larger than the trees on distant hills. Those nearby trees keep things real I guess, but does simply cropping a photo to remove them change reality in some way?

Does the moon really look that big in Japan, or is this a doctored photo, or some trick angle? Moon looks tiny over here in Ky.

Yesterday was Chinese Moon Festival or Mid Autumn Festival. I read an article that in Japan it was celebrated in the past but now the tradition had somehow faded. Also what people eat and how it is celebrated is quite different in the two countries.

Japan also switched from the Chinese lunar new year system, so a new animal is represented on 1st January instead in a bid to 'modernize and westernize' itself - only for them to use this antiquated style of counting years according to emperors! It's great to celebrate the lunar new year and the 1st of January in the Sinosphere - double the celebrations and holidays!
