Golden oldie

Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, 42, hits a return to Germany's Carina Witthoeft, 18, during their tennis match at Wimbledon in London on Tuesday. Date-Krumm is the oldest woman competing in the main draw at Wimbledon, but age trumped youth as the Japanese veteran won 6-0, 6-2 in just 44 minutes.

Well done! Great to see her still playing, and winning too!

I hope she succeeds in winning a grand slam or two. I really wish she hadn't quit back when she was in her twenties. I had high expectations that she'd do really well in those coming years.

Awesome!

One word..."RESPECT!"

A lot of sportspeople retire at young ages (compared with other occupations), once they stop being at the top of their game, once they stop winning. This would indicate that their priority was to win, not the love of the game.

Date-Krumm has carried on playing, past her supposed "prime", both winning and losing. Seems to me like she actually enjoys playing. Brava!

No, experience trumped inexperience. Give the geriatric angle a rest.

I photographed her for a Japanese / English magazine interview over 20 years ago. Wow, what a stayer :)

She is a tiny women. She's has no power to her game, but more of a baseline player with good control from side to side. Good footwork.

"Golden Oldie" might be a little demeaning, but in any case I'm glad she's still at it, and clearly still doing well. Good on her!

Look at her, she is in amazing shape for any age!

What is it with the agism in Japan?

Funny, I never see ANY headlines about the age of the old men of Japan on JT...

really, really respect her

I am looking forward to a photo of the oldest male entrant, with lots of suitable sly digs at his advancing years.

Hopefully you can get some kind of "silver fox" reference in there (unless he dyes his hair) (if he even has any) (except of course on his back and ears) .

Old sports guys, eh - har!
