Golden tree

Security personnel guard a 2.4-meter-tall Christmas tree, studded with pure gold, on display at Ginza Tanaka Kikinzoku jewelry store in Tokyo. The tree is made of gold plates and leaf which weigh a total 12 kilograms. The tree, not for sale, is worth 150 million yen.

I'm sure those two clowns will serve as a great deterrent to any would be thieves.

It's kinda tacky looking and a waste of money/gold.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Tacky, but the gold can be re-melted for jewellery, etc.

"Santa, step away from the tree with your hands in the air!"

It doesn't matter it is from gold - I don't like it ! Why everything VERY expensive have to be nice? Million times more I would prefer the warmth of a real Christmas tree with a touch of jewelery for example.

And those two are martial artists in disguise, right!

Keeping with the Japanese tradition of only employing young, muscular and in-shape security guards who look like authority figures, and who would have no problems running after and tackling a would-be thief! What an utter joke.

and yet they could have had even better security with no guards. most people wouldn't even think it was made of actual gold if no one ever said it was.

Trouble with a tree like that (apart from the general over-the-top tackiness of a pure-gold anything) is that any tinsel and baubles you decorated it with would disappear into the overall bling. And what's a Christmas tree without tinsel and baubles?

Looks like something my kids and their friends used to come up with every year at this time in kindergarten.

These guards wouldn't last 5 minutes in Walpole prison.

Hahaha... LOL... Good Luck... My money is on a couple unemployed Newspaper delivery oyaji's in their late 40's, they will have these couple of rent-a-security guys hog tied and replace that tree with a bonsai and a few sprinkles of glitter... That tree will be on it's way to Shanghai before you can say, "illegal Bicycle Parking..." And the keystones won't have a clue... Don't say I didn't say so!

Why does Japan even bother with Christmas? They have no idea about the spirit of Christmas, which is for most spending quality time with your family/friends and just relaxing with good food, a few drinks and enjoying each others company. Where as in Japan it is just a normal working day with perhaps a piece of KFC thrown in if you're lucky.

Christmas in Japan is just another retail marketing opportunity (especially for KFC & Lvve Hotels)...

Those guards look majime.

I'm not a religious person, but clearly this tree was not designed in the spirit of Christmas.

I can see a benny-hill style chase breaking out very shortly involving these security guards....

Well, Christmas is originally a pagan celebration with the tree being part of the worship of nature. A tree made of gold seems very appropriate to me.

@dentshop: Fair enough - I see what you mean! I'll get my gold spray paint!

No, no. No need for that. I am sure you have a tradition of family and feasting for Christmas. Dont change a thing!

These guys are a comedy combi right? I know I've seen them before.

"worth 150 million yen"

Current market price of gold, 4100yen per gram Weight of tree, 12Kgs or 12000grams,

Intrinsic value of tree if melted down into gold 49.2 million yen.

Must have been VERY hard to make....

Ok, i don't need this fancy decoration, but i have to admit it....Tokyo illumination at night is fantastic!!! And i love the Christmas spirit in Japan, even though it's artificial and made to serve commercial purposes...

lol 150 million yen for that ugly thing?! bwahahahaha... gold! __

@Tokyokawasaki.. Do you even know what the spirit of Christmas is?....it's not what you said...Constantine of Rome changed the national religion to Christianity and started celebrating Jesus's birth about 300 years after his death and resurrection...then the pagans in Rome came involved and the Druids who worshipped nature etc added the tree when the Pagans joined the church...... i know Japan is not a religious country and Christmas is about the same as Valentines day.... (get a date and then get some KFC fried chicken!)....but it is not what you explained...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Dentshop... you are wrong also.... read above explanation please to see the truth.

@Mojado

.but it is not what you explained...

So Christmas ISN'T about spending time with family and friends?!? Err... Well, maybe for you it isn't.

As for your "history lesson," yeah right. No one knows for certain the specific dates in Jesus's life. Late December was a convenient time to mark his birth, because the Christians could simply graft the celebration over top the already-existing winter solstice celebrations of the pagans.
