Aren’t owls nocturnal? So when do these birds sleep? This is really pathetic that you would treat an owl this way.

nice indeed to see .

I really hate wile animals being subjected to this kind of thing. They should be out in the wild doing what owls do, not entertaining people while drinking coffee. Even JK Rowling said you should not keep owls as pets!!

These places need to be shut down.

Ah! Now I get it, because of the owls in Harry potter. Took me a minute why you mentioned her. Not a fan of the movies or books.

But yeah, I hate to see this. The animals in cages that that really gets my goat are bears, especially polar bears.

Owl,,, dog, cat are originally nocturnal, but they have been biologically changing little by little since living with humans for a long time. It seem these are now more active in daylight than night. My dog sleeps well all night and it is very active in daylight.

Dogs are domesticated creatures. Cats have never really been nocturnal, they are diurnal (most active at dawn and dusk). Owls aren't domesticated. Owl genetics haven't significantly changed from their original, wild forms - indeed, I doubt if most of the owls in these cafes were even bred in captivity,

What we're seeing in owl cafes is animal abuse, pure and simple. It's heartbreaking to see an animal that should be a little bit dangerous, a little bit distrustful of you, turned into a mindless prop just because it's "kawaii".

I believe nocturnal is for prey - predator lives. In captivity they have nothing to fear, so leading a diurnal life is OK.

Your belief doesn't undo centuries of evolution.

@katsu78 - Your belief doesn't undo centuries of evolution.

Your belief doesn't make sense. Yes, dogs and cats have been domesticated for 10's of thousands of years. However, owls have not. Everything about an owl's evolution is to be a nocturnal hunter.

These animal cafes should all be shut down. Remember that cat cafe that had many diseased and dying cats that was closed down last year? I think it was in Shibuya. I'm curious about the mortality rate of the owls in this cafe.

Owls are not domesticated now, but if owls were domesticated to human time from generation to generation for hundreds of years, some of them would be genetically diurnal someday by the theory of evolution. A few owls might be little active in shorter time like this owl although most of them never.

I've heard about mortality of cats/dogs in cafe. They have longer life because of medicine and good nutrition. they are fed better food and taken to animal hospital or vets come sooner if they are sick. Animals cafe were diseased and died lately, but not often, not everyday. It may happen once in while.

So, maybe it’s best to have an animal cafe for all wild creatures as long as they’re not dangerous?

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Yeah and there was a scandal where a cat cafe was found to have sick cats that were infecting each other and dying and the owner tried to cover it up to save money. I'm sure most of the animals are mistreated and forced to be in an uncomfortable and overstimulated environment for entertain people. Disgusting businesses that would never be allowed in other countries.

There are always bad cafe owners anywhere. however it seems most owners are good. Many many foreign visitors happily come to cat/dog/owl cafes everyday even dolphin show at sea zoo even if visitors heard about bad scandal.

Owl cafes are so wrong. No different than Honey the Dolfin's abandoned in a defunct aquarium. When will keeping wild animals, especially for profit, be outlawed? They have a job to do in the ecosystem, not perched on our shoulders all day or trapped in a concrete bathtub for your "amusement".

Wild animals are not toys.

She knows the owl can't perch on shoulders all day long, probably perching on for some hours at most, then go back to the cafe to let it sleep behind front, then another one goes.

I was thinking I should reserve judgement. It would be nice to think these were rescued owls, and that the cafe was raising money to help such owls, and that the owls only spent a short time in the cafe and the rest at a more appropriate location. But the article below, which refers to the Forest of Owl cafe, doesn't inspire confidence.
