Well, keep it toned down... We don't need more tourists in the wonderful Kujuukuri-hama, Sotobo area... It's peace and quiet and I want it to stay like that in the future as well...

I think the point of the photo is the golden path across the sea right through the torii. And I doubt that surfing in January would make anyone happy. The photo is beautiful, anyway. I wish they had Photoshopped the surfer, though.

Waves have been bad this winter. I have only got out once in the last 4 weeks. Warm though.

I think they need to re-title this photo "Happy If It Weren't So Flat Surfer". I agree with ebisen that Chiba's Sotobo/Minami-Boso is wonderful. It's a hidden gem of natural beauty under the nose of millions of Kantoites that think of Chiba as "dasai".

Surfer? To be a surfer one needs waves. He is a swimmer or, possibly, a sitter.

He could be wearing a US President Nixon mask and we wouldn't know.

This guy needs a trip to Hawaii to surf 10-15 meter waves. Children in the USA have waves bigger than that at the California State Fair, which is a machine generated wave action.

I personally do not know of any surfers that can handle 10-15 meters.

I like 2-3 and that happens quite often in this country. Plus South of Tokyo in Sagami Bay, a really warm current from the Philippines comes this way.

There are a lot of sitters always waiting for the perfect wave and that is a waste of time. (Especially if wearing a Nixon mask).

So I recommend getting into boogie boarding. Lots of fun out there.

ive been too this little bay many times they close the access road off for non local traffic as the roads are tiny even compared too most side streets in Nippon by the way its about 30/40minutes north of Kamogawa tis not far from Matsube Bay ....

Very nice picture. But some advice to the surfer, in winter, go and hit the waves of Sea of Japan. The Pacific is flat most of the time. I guess he just went out sitting on his board to meditate or he had a fight with his wife and wanted to get away from it all.

I guess these two dots at the right corner of the picture is our surfer.

Or a 7mm suit if he is tough.

you only need a 5mm in chiba boots gloves and hood chiba by they way has constant surf all year though this little bay is tucked away and barely gets bigger than a foot or two when every else is macking great place too take your kids

nihonkai gets plenty of swell during the winter months though its almost as cold as Hokkaido

Chiba is colder than Sagami Bay South of Tokyo in Kanagawa.

However, I just wear a 5mm. Would not want to try a 7 although rare for surfers, and never heard of a 10mm.

Definitely do not need a hood, as it blocks sound from the crowds, and gloves are a waste. Just keep your hands in the water.

The only reason I wear boots is because I damaged the bones on the top of my feet using fins for Boogie Boarding down in Shimoda during a Taifun. Has taken years to heal.

gloves are a waste..? should try surfing around Ichinomiya Sunrise Torami Shidashita Taito keeping your hands in the water will only make them colder putting them under your armpits might help i have never worn a hood though i am thinking about getting one as its freezing if you dont wear boots after 3 minutes you wont be able too feel your surfboard under your feet and will have too get out out of the water after 30 minutes its seriously cold this time of the year around here

@It'sMe:The 10mm wetsuit is good for diving but not for surfing since it restricts your movements. We usually wear a 6/5/4mm up here in Hokkaido with hood, boots and gloves together with a waistbelt with a heating pad and that's warm enough even in the snowstorm. The sea is not that cold, it is getting out that is terrible.

I wore a 10mm suit while wind-surfing and was fine. Agree a 7mm suit would be fine.

Never did surfing but I do have my share of diving licences and dived in many locations

Windsurfing is very different from surfing, you don't move your arms up and down so much. Surfing requires a lot more flexibility than windsurfing thus 6mm is about as thick as you can manoeuvre. I know there is a 7mm out there for surfing but I don't think it would be so good.

Got to disagree there some of the quick turns that involve rapid movements of the arms and limbs while maintaining balance.

Don't see surfers diving under the sail to the other side, etc. But all is good.

Nihonkai especially the Notohanto area is the place to surf at this time of year...

It's a pretty pic but for surfing I think the north coast of Maui has it beat....
