Happy Valen-Tarantino

Director Quentin Tarantino appears at the Japan premiere of his new film "Django Unchained" in Tokyo's Shinjuku on Wednesday night. Organizers dubbed the event "Happy Valen-Tarantino Night." Tarantino, 49, let loose with a few expletives to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Tarantino said he got the idea for the opening scene of the movie while he was in his Tokyo hotel room three years ago. "Django Unchained" is set for nationwide release on March 1.

I like the lassoos / lariats on their hips; what're they for My Little Pony? Kittychan? Giddiyap-kudasaimase!

Nice cowgirls. Tarantino is overrated though.

Just saw him on TV. Looks like he should check into rehab.

Seriously, Quentin, how about a movie that doesn't involve people getting killed in new and exciting ways? Show us some variety before you pass yourself as a great director.

Mr.Tarantino is just a mere reflection of how truly messed up American society is at this very moment and time; drugs, violence, racism, classism etc..but hey who's perfect??

Agree, his movies are B grade pap. How he is seen as this great artist is beyond me. Cute little gauchos though.

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

No, his movies are funny.

The dialog of his movies is basically written to seem like a bunch of women talking away about nothing, except they are talking about drugs, violence, racism, etc. in such a normal way it becomes funny. Those are strong themes and are an easy way to make his audience connect with the emotional message of the movie, to include shock and making you purposefully feel uncomfortable.

The actors know this, which is why Samuel Jackson asked a reporter to say the N word on TV during an interview.

Of course, QT seems to be full of himself with all the nostalgic references to past cinema in his movies and his on and off screen rants. But that is cool too, the rants show another perspective that is hilarious, e.g., Madonna's like a virgin reference in Pulp Fiction or the everyone in Top Gun is gay reference from (what movie?). When you watch one of his movies, you can tell he was involved because the perspective is obviously QT and it is usually shocking.

the Madonna scene was reservoir dogs not pulp fiction.

Viking. all the stuff you say just confirms he is no great artist. B movies are so because they are not very original and recycle old and used themes. Just because his characters talk matter of factly about tough topics doesn't make it clever.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

I'd rather watch a film with Japanese cowgirls than a Tarentino flick.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

But you know it is a QT film when you watch it because it is uniquely QT. He has a unique vision and can effectively communicate it. I call that art whether I like the art or not.

AKBfan: Every movie/play/etc has a recycled theme. And the topics are not that tough in QT movies, they are just more distilled than other films, e.g., Kill Bill's theme of revenge, which was based on a Japanese movie about a woman who seeks revenge.

Those are some dy-no-might cowgirls!

Tarantino is a master (despite Django which was one of his more mediocre films). I would be more worried if soccer moms, AKB fans, etc. appreciated his films as such. They are welcome to stand in line for the easy to get Kate Hudson romantic comedies and Adam Sandler fart fests if it means I have a little more elbow room in the theater.

Not just America, I've seen my country, Australia, slide further down the drain over the last couple of decades. Hollywood, video games, etc are just adding fuel the idea that violence is good as long as your not on the receiving end. QT promotes this, therefore he is a thug.

"Tarantino is overrated" says an AKBfan...

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Hoser, pray tell, just how is the dipstick in the above picture a "master"?

If he stuck to one or two movies of violence conquers all, he'd pass as a mediocre director, albeit a limited one at that.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

If Tarantino is a "master," horsey, I can't imagine the superlatives up your sleeve for someone with real talent.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

It's only human for people to spout off on topics they actually know little about. Tarantino is a bete noir for a lot of people who actually have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to cinema.

Funny movie - Spaghetti Western slave movie Very funny !!!

It's actually funny listening to people who don't like Tarantino films falsely explain why they don't. "Too much violence!" "He tries to be too fancy!" they scream when we all know they can't keep up with subtitles, non-linear story lines, and dialogue that lasts more than 10 seconds at a time.

The movie is not historically accurate but fun to enjoy because YES it is a movie.

But they had plenty of death matches long time ago. I will not " Spoil " the plot but it's a funny & well written movie beginning - end.

DiCaprio, Don Johnson (Miami Vice) & the very cool Jamie Foxx is cool !!

I have watched the movie in the U.S. very funny !!!!!

I thought the movie was great ... very Tarantino style. Loved where the hoodsmen argue about the eye holes in sheets.

I hope that's meant to be funny?

I've seen plenty of Tarentino films, and all I see is a mass of gunfire, heaps of swearing and a casual attittude to murder. I can just imagine the brandy sniffers and goatee strokers in his fan club watching and nodding appreciatively as another person is gunned down in an interesting fashion, applauding as a moronic one-liner is uttered as the victim hits the floor/ground.

He tries to ape Sergio Leone but fails miserably, lacking the great director's skill and ability to produce a story which will live in people's hearts and create iconic characters for decades to come.

Just my opinion... and I want more thumbs down, lol

Interesting thread- Most of the first set of posts completely ignored the Hollywood icon, and discussed two no-name Japanese models dressed up in fake cow-girl outfits.

Then it devolved into a debate between the Tarantino otaku and the Tarantino hating otaku.

I personally think he makes a good movie. It is obviously referential and derivative, but generally seamlessly down and entertaining. (Inglorious is a definite exception- cardboard).

However, it is most certainly Bubble Gum.

Oh, and yeah, the cowgirls are cute too.

he doesn't try to leone, he just owned the 90s big screen for me, he'll always be whacky exploding mishmash funky original cinema to me,dont u remember how fun it was when pulp fiction, reservoir dogs and true romance came out!! quentin's a wicked mo fkr!

I have an idea for making a movie after seeing this picture....and the guy in the middle would have nothing to with it.

What the heck does "Valen" mean? All I get is places in Norway. Isn't Valen plus Tarantino=Valentino (the fasion designer)? Wish I was there Tarantino to "whip me into a frenzy"

Like him, or not, Tarantino is a master filmmaker. Mastery can be define as an achievement of a very high degree of proficiency in a skill, and peer acclaim recognizing that. Does Tarantino meet those qualifications? Yep. And he's good box office, and celebrity draw. Not bad for a video shop clerk from Tennessee...

I assume its a play on Valentine's Day...

Regardless of whether he's talented or not, his movies have provided some memorable catch-phrases. If you disagree with me then "I'ma get medieval on your a$$". ;-)

Nonsense! Failure to understand Leone or Tarantino if you believe this.
