Haunted tunnel

The Old Amagi Tunnel is a disused tunnel that connects Izu and Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula. It was built in 1905 and is believed to be the longest stone-made tunnel in Japan at 445.5 meters. It is part of former Yugashima Town and is 702 meters above sea level on Mount Amagi. It is famous for being the setting of two novels, "Izu no Odoriko" and "Amagi Goe", and also has a reputation for being haunted.

Been there. The scenery and atmosphere is beautiful.

It is a great place.

It looks very creepy. How do I get there?

Catching a bus from Shuzenji Station is probably the easiest way if you don't drive. It's not too bad of a ride if you have a bicycle, though you will probably have to park your bicycle in a car park about 1.9km from the tunnel itself (unless you have something that can deal with very rough and uneven road).

Dont bike it.

The roads are narrow and twisty, all manner of vehicles including trucks use it and there is plenty of evidence of crashes along the way.

Hire a car from Shimoda station, and go to Kawazu falls on the way.

I've done the trip many, many times.
