Its good to see Japan and the US acknowledge our past. Its even greater to see where we are now, peaceful, friendly allies for 75 years.

Beautiful picture. Kudos to Prime Minister Abe.

Yeah nice picture. But I wish Abe would learn how to shake hands properly. He's clearly doing that 'fingers only' routine which always gives an impression of reluctance.

Not necessarily. What we are seeing is a photo of a split second movement. Also, the veteran is in his 90s, probably very frail, so I think a vigorous handshake would hurt him. Anyway, the hug in the second photo is a nice gesture.

This is great! Thanks Mr. Abe.

Didn't watch TV? He was hugging them

OK my handshake point was a bit trivial, I grant you.
Also as per other chat:
OK I'm revising my view somewhat. (Not that I am under any illusion that anybody will care, of course!). Abe's actions were meaningful and he deserves credit for doing what he did. I was too harsh/churlish before. And as I noted yesterday, nor do I think he needed to apologize. But I do think there is too little awareness in Japan about how and why the war started, and he could and should have addressed this. So in that sense it was a missed opportunity. But I recognise his actions were positive nevertheless.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.

@Brian - Amen ! I can't remember who said that, but I have heard it before.

Wounds also happened in the bubble as in other places of our times.

It's very nice that Abe and Obama have now traded condolences. Good job, Abe! Thanks!

This is heart warming. I'm so glad this has finally happened. God Bless both of them, and all of the survives.
