Actor Junichi Ishida putts an event by Seikagaku Corp, which manufactures and sells intra-articular injections for improving joint functions, to promote "Hiza Ikiiki no hi" (Healthy knee day) on Wednesday at Marunouchi Oazo in Tokyo. Ishida took part in a talk with Sports Medical Center Director Akihiro Tsuchiya on knee arthrosis in Japan. Tsuchiya said more than 25 million people in Japan suffer from knee arthrosis.

Rather than pills and injections, sit in a chair like normal civilised people.

If he misses, he should just give up golf....

some14some
that's about 20% of Japan's population = elderly people over 65 years, all of them suffer from knee arthrosis? unbelievable.

I used to celebrate healthy knee day, but then I took an arrow to the knee

@BeenJackingOff What I mean is, they focus on selling the so-called "cure", a pill, or injection, whatever, rather than focusing on prevention with exercise, muscle strengthening, lifestyle modification, etc.

Anything to relieve the pain of sick people, so be it. Now I also want a golf club, a ball and a hole like the one pictured. I'd have it.
Ben_Jackinoff
I agree, but about a different part than you probably intend.

'Rather than pills and injections, sit in a chair like normal civilised people.'
And then, why do other nations whose citizens all sit in chairs, get this as well? It's 'wear and tear' arthritis. Over 20 million people in the US have it too.
andrewfx51
Too bad the "Best Healthist"award belongs to someone in Kabuki-cho.

25 million people in Japan suffer from knee arthrosis... Are you serious? I know we have a huge elderly population but... Note to self: Get in the arthritis racket now.

Japan, forever developing "magic pills" to sell to the masses.
Himajin
The glucosamine pills don't have much effect. The intra-articular shots work like a charm. You need to have a series of them, but they work.

Seikagaku Corp.... the active ingredient in their joint drug, hyaluronic acid, was initially discovered by Karl Meyer in the 1930's. He was born in Germany but moved to the United State in the early 1930's.
Ben_Jackinoff
They are talking about injections, not pills.
Wakarimasen
no way 25 million have this disease......

cactusJack,
Once the damage is done, it is obviously too late for prevention and it is not the muscles, but the cartilage that is the problem. These injections can also be useful for tears in cartilage that often need surgery to repair. So, while, what you say is important, there are those for whom this could be quite helpful.

Once you have knee damage and arthritis in the knee joint it doesnt matter what you sit on. Once you have it you have it and sadly sometime pills and injections are the only relief. Not everyone gets their bad knees because of the way they sit.
cactusJack
btw, my dad has lived with bad knees his whole life....so I guess when we all get old, we have to get our knees injected with drugs. There is nothing we can do to prevent this outcome....I don't buy that logic.

Well as a sufferer of a major knee injury and total recunstruction with titanium inserts into my knee i am very interested in this. @ Himajin where did you get the injection
Himajin
I haven't had them, but the clinic I worked at in Kobe (until MIL got very ill ) gives them. It's not just there, though, a lot of orthopedic clinics do them.
nath
No Japanese knows about this. I took a poll. Stupid.
daisan
was he wearing socks?

Proper age-appropriate exercise and good diet will work wonders and preserve flexibility and strength
Still in my mid-40's and I don't normally try to do stuff I could do when I was 20/30. And some of my MA-Instructors who are 80 outperform me. :(
Key is being consistent as you can't undo damage from neglect, except for a very short period.
