Murder suspect Tatsuya Ichihashi is led out of Gyotoku police station on Thursday. He was taken to the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office for further questioning. So far, he has refused to answer any questions. He has not eaten anything since his arrest on Tuesday, and has only consumed green tea since arriving at Gyotoku police station early Wednesday, investigators said. He turned down the three meals provided for him on Wednesday and breakfast on Thursday, according to the sources.

why didnt the moron shave his head after all the pictures of his face with long hair got splashed everywhere? what a tool.
societymike
Is it just me or does he look nothing like the WANTED picture they plastarded everywhere?? He's thinner, sharper cheeks, chin, etc.
combinibento
Question: What is the purpose of a perp-walk in this country if they cover the guy's face? Where's the fun in that?
dbung10
what you can see of his face looks totally different to what i was expecting.
norinrad21
He doesn't look like the same guy in the pictures we saw previous. This dude looks more like a final fantasy character
nandakandamanda
Just when he was starting to look good-looking...
Altria
He looks a lot better than in the photo!
northlondon
Seeing glimpses of him here and when they put him in the police car at Tokyo eki, it begs the question. Does Ichihashi really look any different to how he looked when he escaped two and a half years ago ?
noborito
Why are they covering his hands? Normally they will show foreigners with their cuffs on. Refusing to eat. He wants to die. Answering no questions is a smart defense. I'm sure he will get off for lack of evidence.
Proffesor
Looks like a real spoilt piece of cabbage. His Stubbornness wont help him in anyway. He makes me wanna puke!
MadokaKato
Maybe he's no answering, because he knows his life is over. So he is feeling sorry for himself right now.
I wonder why he would do something this stupid?
He had a steady girlfriend at the time. I guess he lost touch from fantasy to reality since he loves reading hard core porn comics. I wonder if he knew that he would kill her if he gets too rough..
Maria
That doesn't look anything like him.
Apsara
Really? I think it looks a lot like him, modified lips and all.
northlondon
Madoka. It hasn't gone unnoticed here that you have been trying to make some kind of defence of Ichihashi in your previous posts. Are you trying to say that he didn't know that he would kill her and that it was a bit of rough play ? Irresponsible post of the highest order.
isthistheend
Its hard to collect my feelings about this xxx and his dastardly crime. When I talk to J-people and try to tell them how much it meant to the gaijin community that/and when he got caught, it wasn't quite commnicable. This wasn't just another murder, but with the escape and all, and the uglyness of this still 20's year old man, and the killing of a English teacher, a lovely 22-year old at that, it just wreaked from day 1. Of course he doesn't look like many "expect". He's had numerous surgeries, hes been on the run, and his xxx face is half covered, his hair is long. People's appearances change under such conditions. I think he's going to end like Miura, long hanging in their and then finally hanging himself...or at least we can hope it ends along those lines. Sitting around in prison is just a waste. And don't give me that "everybody's done something bad in their lives" line. This was senseless, cold blooded Murder and then doing everything in his wits to escape capture.
northlondon
Sounds like an attempt to make him sound normal. And extremely disrespectful to try and turn the murder of Lindsay Hawker into a manga story comparison.
smartacus
isthistheend
I don't see it the same way. I don't see this murder as any more or less dastardly than the murder of a Japanese, although ti certainly has overshadowed the hunt for the killer who beheaded the girl in Shimane and the guy caught on video using the ATM card of the murdered university student.
Quite frankly, I would be very disappointed if the Hawker killing meant more to the foreign community than any other murder. For me, the loss of any life in violent circumstances affects me greatly.
Junnama
Indeed. Reports of what the police found in his apartment indicate this was no misunderstanding that lead to her death. Brutal, brutal stuff.
LoveUSA
Maybe he is not normal mentally but I am sure he regrets what he has done and feels shame. He destroyed so many lives, his victim's, her family's, his parents' lives. I think he looks resigned to die now that his freedom has been taken. I feel sorry for the victim and her family and his parents and I would like to know why he killed Lindsay, what turned this oridnary looking boy into a murderer and liar ...
LoveUSA
PS. he has not eaten for many days, was on the run, had surgeries and stress, it is normal to look emaciated and thin, however during his cosmetic surgeries he had implants in his cheeks and chin and change of lips eyes and nose, so under normal situation (normal sleep and food) he would look like the photo released after his surgery.
TokyoXtreme
I guess the officer standing to the right just got finished with some particularly nasty bit of interrogative surgery on poor Ichihashi.
TanakaTaro
The photo on the wanted pictures was probably taken pretty soon after surgery so he was still a bit puffy.
bobbafett
my bet is that you are right. I am sure that killing Hawker was not on his mind. I am sure he thought that consensual sex was on his mind after all, Hawker had gone to his house.
While for a foreign woman that does not always mean sex, for any Japanese girl I or my friends have taken home it definitely means game on.
Aside from not getting sex, Ichihashi would then have been confronted with a very pissed off foreign girl who compared to a Japanese girl would have refused him in a blunt and traumatic way for a psycho like Ichihashi.
Since he was obviously a narcissist, his strange reality would have been shattered and his ego pulverized and manhood put into question all at the same time.
Faced with these dilemmas and being an immature Japanese male who is used to getting what he wants, and I should mention psycho again, The guy flipped out and then tried to erase it as if it were a mistake.
Moderator: Readers, no one knows what happened except Ichihashi. Please refrain from making lurid speculation.
LoveUSA
This photo does not show his feet but in the video I noticed he has no socks and wear just slippers. It is rather cold, do the police have any particular reason for not providing him with socks? Not that I worry about Ichihashi but his lookwas strange.
northlondon
More disrespectful trash. So she had it coming because she went to his apartment then ? I guess the torturing part before he killed her was also a spur of the moment thing ? Rubbish.
studebaker
They reason they hide the handcuffs is that in some cases where guilt or innocence is unsure, the act of being photographed in handcuffs is a sign of guilt, and the defending lawyer uses it to throw out the case. Leads me to think that anyone in a media frenzy case like this one could throw the case or at least add a lot of drama to it by pulling their hands out of the jacket or pouch the police hide the cuffs in. If he's starving himself, as soon as he's unable to stand, he'll be transferred to a hospital and put on an IV drip. Hopefully the police will be clever enough to handcuff him to the bed.
LoveUSA
Does he have a lawyer?
bobbafett
Northlondon, don't read it with a chip on your shoulder. I am just saying maybe from his perspective. I don't sympathize with the guy geez. Thats all Madoka is trying to understand too. what triggered him? No one is defending him....he is not taking so people are asking questions....trying to understand...not vilifying Hawker.
LoveUsa,
Altria
He would be the dumbest criminal ever if he gave a picture with his name, e-mail address and phone number to someone he intended to kill. People are just trying to fathom what possibly could have caused him to do what he did.
LoveUSA
I am sure that Ichihashi's behavior was not the sweetest if Lindsay has said something blunt to him but I guess we will never know because Ichihashi has set his mind on being silent.
bobbafett
Yes, I bet Hawker had a load to say to the guy and he probably deserved it but it could be what made him snap or he could have just snapped at the most gentile rejection because he is a psychotic narcissist and psychotic narcissists cannot handle rejection or having their twisted sense of reality rumbled.
terebiko
He will be getting a marubozu soon. I hope they don't let him die from malnutrition before the trial. I guess if he continues not eating they will have to give him IV nutrition. I also wonder when the trial will be, and if it will be with a jury or not.
flatearther
If any woman is with a man whose intent is to cause her physical harm (and trust me, it's obvious) profanity is usually warranted. As far as trying to understand him, why? Leave that to the psychiatrists. I don't care about his motives, reasons, etc. He murdered her in cold blood. He convinced HER to go to his apato, not the other way round. He KNEW what he was doing, don't infantilize/protect him. I have no desire to understand him, I'm afraid I already do. Just another creep with a control fetish, like most murderers of his type. He took advantage of Lindsay because she was weak, not because she was foreign. If he had met a Japanese girl in the same situation, I'm quite sure he would have killed her instead. Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't it been reported he was abusive to his previous girlfriend?
Eyeblack
If he killed her then he is a murderer. It is only a matter of legal-degree whether it was premeditated or in a passion-induced rage. Lindsay may have been too reckless, but she didn't deserve to get killed by him.
flatearther
Let's stop sugarcoating this. He is a killer, he is a control freak, he is capable of crocodile tears and he was probably crying because his life was destroyed and he knew it. Besides, who cares if he cries? That's just one more thing that Lindsay will never be able to do, though I'm sure she did a lot of it in her last few brief moments of life. Why don't we all try to spare a thought for her now instead of attempting to understand Mr. One Chopstick. I don't have a molecule of sympathy for him, I reserve that emotion for Lindsay. She deserves it.
Moderator: Readers, no further lurid speculation of what might have happened please.

Ichibashi is captured, but it's not over. Going through this Japanese judiciary is another battle.

I think everyone deals with such a tragedy in different ways so we should not critisize one another. Some people may want to understand how a fellow human being can become such an evil monster. I don't think is being disrespectful. And perhaps by understanding more about human nature and the human mind we can try to prevent horrible murders from happening and maybe even prevent a person from becoming a killer.
flatearther
Tossing out gossip about how she never should have gone to his apato and that she may have rejected him has never helped anyone understand anything. However, if they could try to remember that Lindsay Hawker was a real person and give her some respect that would be nice. No matter what she did or didn't, he had no right to kill her.
sirgamble
The answer is this... He was bloody intelligent and divisive!!
Why do you think he was able to evade the police radar for so long?
The fact he convinced Lindsay he was a nice guy shows how divisive he is. Have no idea why he killed her. My guess is that he's a tricky guy though... the kind who lures people in step by step... then SNAP.
Like school bullies (for anybody who has studied education) most would assume they're big thick-heads who just rough people up. Not true. They're really intelligent people who lure in their victims and torture them over a long period of time, while staying out of the radar. Often a person being bullied will be the one getting in trouble for over-reacting because everybody else views the bully as a nice guy.
I actually taught this guy at the Koiwa branch of Nova. He was one of those... guys. He'd show a lot of interest in people's opinions, and a lot of respect for people. He was contentious, worked hard, studied hard and to me came across as a hard working, intelligent but lonely guy.
I can't say he came across as a killer, but... before he did anything, he definitely rang a few bells as a different kind of bloke. Not some psycho... the kind of guy who could definitely do you slowly, while looking like the victim the whole time...
LoveUSA
what if he had some personality disorder? He used a lot of aliases like Inoue Kosuke then Ijima Takeshi and Fujii Kazuo etc. How could he remember all his names and respond to them?

Kudos to you, honey...Now we're really talking about. There's more than meets the eye with this scumbag.
flatearther
Lots of people use aliases, especially in Japan. Movie stars, hosts, hostesses, etc. Use of an alias has nothing to do with your underlying mental condition, especially if you're a criminal on the run. That said, it's quite obvious he's NOT right in the head.

And yes, I believe there must be many "sirgambles" out there who taught Ichihashi at Nova. Why don't we hear more from them? That would be something to make a good book of.
LoveUSA
I read in the newspaper that Ichihashi chose by himself the clothes he is wearing and he preferred not to hide his face by the hood.
tigerguy
They should use some old school torture techniques to make him talk and confess. What a stubborn dixkhead!
Beerplease
You've gotta feel sorry for the guy. I'd hate to be grilled by the cops here day in and day out. Yes, I know he committed a gruesome crime, but prisoners have rights, too.
SpanishEyez37
@Beerplease
So what about Lindsey's right to be alive, that was taken away by this animal? He is being treated more mercifully than the poor woman was in her last moments of life.
He lost his right to be treated like a human being when he snuffed out a young life.
butterfly1
i dont feel sorry for him. he is an animal and deserves what will come to him.
nemoflow
I pretty much agree with everything bobbafett in this thread. Basically that is what will have happened, me thinks.
SpanishEyez37
Does Japan have laws against aiding and abedding (sp)? Because the cops need to follow that money trail. There is no way he could of evaded capture for so long without a bit of help.
Dewaashita
Sir Gamble, thank you.
Beerplease
"He lost his right to be treated like a human being when he snuffed out a young life."
So you're willing to lower yourself to his level in the name of revenge?
"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons."
Quite reflective of Japan and its penal system. Ichihashi deserves punishment, but not torture or inhuman conditions.
Sarge
Beerplease, I pay taxes in Japan, and I don't want my tax money paying for this killer's food, clothing, housing medical care, etc.
Toecutter
There is nothing to "understand" about this bag of filth. He killed, he ran away, he actively evaded capture and would have continued to do so if some rather quick thinking people hadn`t done the right thing.
His actions all speak volumes about the type of person he is.
I am so happy he has FINALLY been caught.
DenDon
it has not been proven that he killed anyone yet. murder suspect. yes I think he did it but the idea of civilised society is that we have to be sure before stringing up ropes. that is what makes us different from crazed killers
SpanishEyez37
@Beerplease
Inhuman? Revenge? Ugh!
See, I wonder when people like you say stuff like that. Would you say to the police "'Make sure he's well-taken care of and fed'' after he's been on the run for 2 years for killing a family member of yours.
He is the once refusing to eat, thinking going on a hunger strike is going to get him out of this mess.
But as I said before , all bets are off once you take away a life. Done.
SpanishEyez37
OMG! Those people saying it's not proven he killed her?! Ummm he went on the lam for 2 years, changed his face so he couldn't be recognized, and hello!... dead body in the apartment.
I mean really?!
dolphingirl
DenDon: Thanks for your civilized post.
Sarge
No worries, DenDon, it'll be proven he killed her ( who else would have killed her and then put her body in a bathtub filled with sand on his balcony, lol )
SpanishEyez37
@Sarge Thank you for your intelligent post.
flatearther
@SpanishEyez37- Couldn't agree with your points more. For all the other posters over here whinging about innocent until proven guilty, etc, etc. I wonder why you don't defend other accused in this manner. 98% of the posts on articles in the crime section presume the defendants are guilty and make comments about stringing them up, giving them the death penalty and so on. In this case, a lot of people (some the same ones screaming for blood) are sitting here, defending this creep, pleading for sympathy and understanding for this guy. Well, why? At least be consistent with your hypocrisy. If you want to defend criminals, do it in all cases, not just ones involving Japanese victims.
blue_monday
He is limiting his intake of food to make it easier to resist the interrogation, they use the physical discomfort of denying the opportunity to take care of certain bodily functions to break people down. I bet he is limiting his liquid intake to a minimum too. He's trying to outlast the cops. Passing out from hunger is better than confessing.
XXXXX
Haven't thought about that one. It could be possible. Real creepy guy. Let's see how long this media circus lasts and how long till they convict him.
XXXXX
also I think he should be denied the right to refuse anything, including meals. They should be stuffing him. The cops shouldn't be as condescending.
starrise
In japan,if you eat katsudon at police, you must confess all..with tears.
starrise
Believe me.Just make him eat katsudon. He must confess.Actually if I was him and ate the katsudon of police,I will definitely confess. Its a Jp tradition.BTW I believe Ichihashi is the 99% murderer as everyone believe, but my 1% is like this.1,some yakuzas killed the victim.2,but Ichihashi accidentally meet the scene.3,Yakuzas gave him some big money as hush money.4,He ran away cause received the money.Thats why he can run away for the 1st year.(of course ran not for hush money, but for guilty conscience) just 1% thought.
ptolemy
@ starrise:
Yeah I've heard the coppers do some pretty nasty stuff to the katsudon before they serve it. The most mild being spitting in it. Even the worst would be better than what he did to Lindsay.
starrise
Fadamor
Here's what I hear from the nihonjin that post here regarding their police force: They are incompetant, they are lazy, they are more often part of the crime problem than a solution, they regularly torture confessions (I guess because they are too lazy to catch the real perpetrator), they would let a vicious dog escape even if it had already been chained to a tree with a short chain, and you can't trust them as far as you can throw them.
It seems to me that if they were as bad as I'm hearing, the people would have screamed, "Enough!" and demanded a complete overhaul of the police system. But maybe that's just me injecting my gaijin sensibilities into the Japanese way of life that seems to state, "It can't be helped."
usaexpat
Granted his face is obscured in this photo but I'll agree with others that he doesn't look much like the photos that were circulated. It will be interesting if we ever find out what happened or if he merely confesses to the crime.
Sarge
starrise - Your 1% theory has a flaw - the yakuza wouldn't have given Ichihashi hush money, they would have just killed him too.
Beerplease
Sarge, I also pay taxes in Japan--a lot. And I'm glad that there is at least some semblance of democratic rule here that prevents one or the mobs from forcing their will on everyone else. If Ichihashi is proven guilty, he needs rehabilitation; he needs to understand what he did was abhorrent to the morals decided upon by our society, and he needs a long time to reflect on his crime and somehow atone.
Dewaashita
I'd like to buy the man that turned him in a beer.
DenDon
it has not been proven he killed her yet, that is why we have courts of law, judges and now juries, not necktie parties at hanging ridge. I say again yes I am sure he did and you certainly are but that is not enough to condemn him to death already and you know it, as painful as it is for the family (and your sense of bloodlust)
terebiko
I hate to say this, but he is innocent until proven guilty, and if the prosecutor and the police don't get all of their ducks in a row, there is always a possibility that he may not be convicted of murder. There has been a lot of circumstantial evidence, but the judges have to rule on what the prosecution brings to trial. This is going to be an interesting case to follow, whenever it does go to trial that is.
LoveUSA
Why does he refuse to eat: because of shock and stress or because he want to resist police???
Cherryblossomgirl
he doesn't look like the photos
MagnusGarstin
He looks a bit like Michael Jackson in that photo.
