Icy new year

Bathers pray for a healthy new year while dipping in a cold water tub with blocks of ice at a park by Teppozu Inari Shinto Shrine during a winter ritual in Tokyo on Sunday. About 100 people participated in the annual new year event.

They're dicing with death in a way bathing in icy water in this cold season. Yes, they're literally praying on thin ice. Great picture!

They're dicing with death

I'd wager the actively inactive are the ones at risk. Personally I was bollock naked up a mountain in the snow today, which felt great!

Notice they're not up to their necks in this icy water like they would be if they were in an onsen.

Aha! Now that you mention it. I mean, they don't look comfortable anyway you look at them.
