Ig Nobel Prize

Teikyo University School of Medicine Associate Professor Masanori Niimi is joined by a colleague, dressed as a mouse, as they accept the 2013 Medicine Prize during the 23rd First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Thursday. According to the citation, they received the prize "for their research assessing the effect of listening to opera, on heart transplant patients who are mice." The annual prizes, meant to entertain and encourage global research and innovation, are awarded by the Annals of Improbable Research as a whimsical counterpart to the Nobel Prizes which will be announced next month.

Give them credit for having a good attitude about winning.

Last year's winners were from France and gave advice on how to avoid patients exploding during colonooscopies (yes, this is a real risk - gas in the colon can be ignited by the lasers used to take tissue samples).

It doesn't mean the research was useless or stupid, merely that it was amusing or unusual. The research this year is pretty standard, since most often animal trials are required before you can do human trials. It does seem a little ridiculous, but if their intent was to demonstrate that the rhythms in classical music helps to reinforce healthy heartbeats then it may well be transferable from mice to humans.

Interesting. Other thing is that classical music makes people more disciplined, or perhaps the other way around - disciplined people are more likely to listen to classical music.

This could someday prolong human lives
