Japan bows out

Members of Japan's rugby team bow and wave to the crowd after winning their Rugby World Cup Pool B match 28-18 against the U.S. at Kingsholm, Gloucester, England, on Sunday. Japan became the first team to win three out of four pool matches and not advance to the quarterfinals. See story here.

There should at least be some kind of "plate" competition for, say, 3rd and 4th place finishers so that more international rugby experience can be gained while all the world's teams are together in the same place.

Well done Blossoms! On the road to an even better showing at home in 2019!

I would take a bet now that they make the 1/4's in 2019.

They can bow out with their heads held high, very unlucky not to advance to the quarters after winning 3 of 4 matches espescially beating the springbokks in the opener,..

Definitely a good reason to stay up until the wee small hours of the morning. As a rugby tragic, a rugby parent and a long-time Japan resident, I would have to say that the Eddie Jones Show is the best thing to happen in Japanese rugby for a long, long time. Hopefully the great performance by the team this time around will boost crowds at domestic games, get the Japanese population behind the new Super Rugby Franchise, get more kids playing rugby and whip up interest for 2019.

Furthermore, I hope that Japan does not miss out on the awards. Their second try against the Boks (the back line movement with the short pass inside) has to be a contender for best try of the World Cup.

"Japan bows out" This is such a sad headline. Instead, it should be "Japan beats US!". Look at the positive. On the other hand, about everybody beat the US. OK, "Japan bows out".

Well done Japan. Rugby is the perfect team sport for Japan.

Good job for Japan, 3 out of 4, nicely done. Loved watching Japan control lots of scrums & mauls!

Hoping Japan can keep up the momentum!

Another excellent performance. Let's hope top league attendances are a lot higher this year. In my Tokyo days I went to some very sparsely attended top league games. Hopefully such small crowds become a thing of the past.

Japan helped to bring in neutrals when they defeated South Africa... something that no-one expected. Take a bow lads, you've done Japan proud!

Congrats and brilliantly played to the Brave Blossoms - and of course the mastermind, coach Eddie Jones. Entertaining, gutsy and committed in all of their games. For the first time in my decade here, a few Japanese people I speak to actually know the name of one of their own national team players - Goromaru-San - and can maybe distinguish it from American football! Thats an achievement in itself!

So close to getting through as Samoa was basically winning against Scotland for all but the last few minutes. Japan really impressed this time so the 2019 RWC will be interesting.

For the 2015 RWC, a Wallabies vs All Blacks final with the Wallabies triumphing would be very good stuff!

They did themselves and their country proud. I will never forget watching them play NZ at Ellis Park in 1995. Needless to say it was a blood bath but those guys were so committed, they never gave up, and by the end of the game the entire stadium was on its feet for Japan, and the NZ players even applauded them at the end of the match. Its been amazing to watch them since then and just now they are starting to get pay off for all that hard work. Good for them. They can hold their heads high.

That was a good game! I'm so glad US lost the game anyway.

What an incredible tournament for Japan! Definitely the team of the tournament, and unlucky not be able to squeeze through to the quarters.
