U.S. Ambassador John Roos, left, Tokyo American Club President Lance Lee and other officials get ready for the "kagami-biraki" (breaking open the lid of a sake barrel) to celebrate the opening of the rebuilt Tokyo American Club in Azabudai on Tuesday. The 20,000-square-meter facility, located beside the Russian Embassy, has taken three years to build. It has seven dining areas, a rooftop swimming pool, library, seven unique guest rooms, a bowling alley, ballroom, full banquet services and several recreational facilities, including squash courts, a gymnasium, state-of-the-art fitness center and spa. The club currently has about 3,300 members, 40% of whom are Japanese and 30% American. In all, more than 50 countries are represented in the membership.

Went there years ago for drink and wss impressed with the grounds. Seven unique guest rooms? I seem to remember something more like a hotel. Has that been done away with?

A renovation, eh? So that's what they spent the $30,000 per-year membership fees on.

Ah, so they are back by the Russian embassy, with mysterious antennae on the roof, by the pool, no doubt, for some eavesdropping.

They look silly. Happi coats really add nothing to an auspicious occasion.

"The club curently has about 3,300 members, 40% of whom are Japanese"
Shouldn't it be called The Tokyo Japanese Club?
"$30,000 per year membership fee"
What a bargain!

Anyone here ever hang out at the TAC as a kid in the 80's? I think I could have singlehandedly funded this rennovation with all of the change I went through playing Gauntlet in the bowling alley...
