The bodyguards really do look like clones, especially with the face masks. What an oppressively boring country we live in!
Tomi
Can’t even hold her own umbrella.
i want my money back!
Tomi
So the mystery is solved.
This is why I have to pay one month salary as municipal tax.
Pay all these guys salary.

@Monty
Japan is now a primarily finance and tourism driven economy, after the severe decline of manufacturing.
So it is very important for Japan's national survival that foreign tourists come in hundreds of millions to spend money in Japan.

Of course she needs a security detail, but security officers wear suits and ties and holster their guns. Those scruffy guys just look like yak muscle. What message is she sending out?
kaimycahl
More security than she needs. The best protection she will have is, if it rains, she has many umbrellas to protect her. She would’ve better off counting crows!!
socrateos
If she runs for PM, I am all for it.

“ What a ridiculously staged photo opportunity! “
Politics, my friend.
..
“ Koike: Is this my time to run for PM? The LDP is floundering with so many scandals and corruption floating to the surface. They need me! “
Better than Kishida, sleepy Suga and Abe. :)
tora
She's become HIMA after the Olympics
uaintseeme
What did we do now? lol

Yuriko Koike,
a very nice, hardworking lady. :)

Pretty cool to see completely unrelated comments to the subject rarely getting removed as "Off-topic", except when the moderators dislike the content of the comments, even if they are really not "Off-topic."

I recall that most of the criticism was about incompetent, unprofessional security, rather than a lack of it.

She might as well walk within Narita airport....Lot many foreigners going in and out.
Oh Yea....it is in Chiba, not Tokyo.

Koike: Look, there's a tourist... oh how funny they are, scurrying about with their silly backpacks and cameras. There's one using a toy capsule machine. (Claps) How clever they are.
That's what the title of this article brings to mind - a safari or a zoo trip.
tamanegi
Your tax yen hard at work!
El Rata
When Abe was killed in Nara loads of people here on JT criticised the lack of security, now they criticise Koike for the excess of it... Those gaijin must complain about everything...
While I, myself, abhor masks and never use them, I don't care if someone else wants to don one. Aren't we behaving exactly like the mask lovers who wanted to force those things upon us if we make fun of them for wearing them? I'd say live and let live, we freedom lovers are better than this.
Andy
What's with the ridiculous face masks, Koike san? Time to move on and welcome tourists, not scare them away.
Laguna
Legalize marijuana edibles.
sakurasuki
The alternatives is for tax payer need to pay expensive state funeral, so increasing number of guards still considered cheaper.

Geo:
Unfortunately we have exprienced a political assassination not long ago in this country, which has been thought being very safe till now.
Gaijinjland
Uh she’s the governor of Tokyo so, yeah, she’s kind of important whether you like her or not. And those body guards are not for protection against foreigners because tourists probably have no idea who she is. Anyone remember what happened to Abe and the security F up? She probably can’t go out anywhere in public without being surrounded by security now, even if she wanted to.
purple_depressed_bacon
Lol, what, is this her version of going on safari? Find the animals outside of their natural habitat and see how they're thriving? Also, why does she have such an excess of bodyguards? Afraid the tourists will try to take a bite out of her? What a ridiculous outing.
Ascissor
Is this part of YOUは何しに日本へ?
Roten
What a way to scare off any tourists, foreign or otherwise, who might be in Ueno at the time. I would turn and get out of the way if I saw such a group coming toward me.
GBR48
To many foreign tourists, that would look like a bunch of Yak thugs, armed with baseball bats disguised as umbrellas, shepherding a gangster's moll. They would avoid at all costs.
shogun36
well?
did she find any?
The suspense is killing us.
and what will happen when she finds, said tourists?
maybe what she should be looking for is her own umbrella.
i mean is she that lazy or “important” that she can’t walk and hold one on her own?
what a BUSY woman she is………
wallace
Excessive numbers of guards. I count at least eleven. Paid by taxpayers.
Hito Bito
You'd be a lot more welcoming-looking if you stopped surrounding yourself with dozens of security and functionaries...and removed those stupid masks.
Joe Unc
I noticed that all the bodyguards have the same haircut and the same clothes.

GO KOIKE, GO KOIKE !!..
Best Tokyo Gov. ever !!..
ghosthand
I hope she sees ippai gaijin! And also those people that look like gaijin but really are nihonjin!
Monty
to observe foreign tourists visiting the area.
On what purpose?
