Koki Kameda

Former WBA light flyweight champion Koki Kameda, 22, appears at a promotional event for the film "We Own The Night" (Japanese title is "Undercover"), dressed as an American police officer, in Tokyo on Monday. Commenting on the film's plot about a police officer and his family, Kameda said, "In the past few years, I've realized the importance of family ties." Kameda has been on the receiving end of media and public criticism over a controversial split decision with Venezuelan Juan Landaeta in 2006. "We Own The Night" opens on Thursday.

Does this represent the first step in the rehabilitation of "Hit him in the Nxts" Kameda? I hope not.

“In the past few years, I’ve realized the importance of family ties.”

As in, get rid of your father's personal life frustrations and 'yankee' influence and you might get somewhere with your boxing talent.

No kidding. Talk about someone who'd be a whole lot better off cutting those ties.

he has earned being "on the receiving end of media and public criticism" for his boorish behavior in and out of the ring. that man is a horrible role model for anyone. get him out of the public light.

I had a few drinks with him in Shinjuku a while back. He ain't such a bad guy. Its just his life is in the spotlight. He was not boorish at all. Even when a drunk salary man shouted at him. He just shrugged it off. He also hooked me up with a girl that was hanging around. Pretty good fella I reckon. Got the drinks in and all. Was always cracking jokes.

Scratch this film from my "must see" list -- just on principal. Any studio desperate enough to hire this clown doesn't get my 1,800 yen. And, since the Japanese title is "Undercover", why the heck is wearing a police uniform?

How much you wanna bet that the uniform is his REAL uniform for his REAL rent -a-cop job? Gotta make a living somehow!

Lets see, root canal or see this movie. I'll opt for the root canal after seeing Bozo promote it.

I know my boxing and if this kid spent a year somewhere like Kronk in Detroit and without his old man, then we might see some more of the talent that he does possess. Don't forget, he is a decent boxer. He just got too influenced by Japanese TV producers money and his old man. And remember, he's a boxer. So don't expect him to be a role model citizen or a nice person. He doesn't need to be.

It's an American police uniform.

No, Cleo, it's not an "American police uniform".

It's what those 'American' 555 telephone numbers are to actual phone numbers.

Considering the movie is about NYPD officers, the uniform is all wrong. Otherwise one can certainly say it is your "poor" police department's choice of a uniform.

Old "Punch him in the nuts and gouge him in the eye" Kameda...a real gentleman, eh. Never worked a day in his life, living off his famous otohsan's name and money.

It's an American police uniform"

Well, it sure wouldn't be a British police uniform ha ha ha

not an "American police uniform"

The blurb says he's dressed as an American police officer, don't that mean he's wearing an American police uniform? And what's a 555 number?

it sure wouldn't be a British police uniform ha ha ha

It obviously isn't, but he's got the right shaped head for one.

Never worked a day in his life

oh yeah like you have the discipline to be a professional boxer. Do you know what it takes? NO, you do not.

and neither do I.

What is this fascination with the Kamedas in the Japanese media? I don´t want to see these lowlifes any more. Enough.

Cleo, yes... "killin' time here" is too kind a phrase for it.

No, Cleo, it's not an "American police uniform".

How is it not your stereotypical American Police Uniform?

It IS a "American Police Uniform" in that sense.

I don't know about you or if you ever worked in law enforcement, because in the US law enforcement is not centralized there is no "standard" in what uniforms look like, Some places eg uk, japan etc. do have general standards so a uniform in Tokyo pretty much looks the same in Hiroshima. In the US, each jurisdiction has their own standards, some places have excellent uniforms, some departments just throw some stuff together like in the photo. In the US there's even a "Best Dressed Law Enforcement" award each year.

Mr. 3, if anything, it's a 'security' company's uniform.

bobbafett: fair point, I exaggerated. My point is that he has had it a hell of a lot easier than the majority of professional boxers, thanks to the celebrity cult, and his instructions as a cornerman for his brother's fight (you're losing...cheat!) do not reflect well on him or his ethics as a sportsman.

Boxing is full of World Champions who are unsportsmanlike and who elbow, headbutt and lock the arms of their opponents. It's the name of the game. Most World Champions from the States have got there with dubious bookie connections on their way to earning a championship fight. And in a way good luck to Kameda for reaping all that TV money at such an early stage of his career. One good punch and your career is over. What ruined it for Kameda was his father's lack of respect to anyone in the ring or outside the ring and the comical way that the TV producers egged him and his family on to playing the yankee/ bosozoku/ chimpira clowns that they were on TV.

And what's a 555 number?

If you are watching a movie and someone gives their number, it's always "555-something". In other words, a fictitious phone number. For example, in Ghostbusters, the number was 555-2368. The 2368 portion was famous from old television commercials.

Kameda never worked a day in his life? How did he become WBA light flyweight champ?

Looking forward to seeing the movie. I wonder if Mark Wahlberg can outdo his performance in The Departed?

This guy is a joke, A circus monkey, nothing more nothing less.

I'd like to see this kid get his butt knocked to the canvas. Maybe he'll try Manny Pacquiao. Many would eat him alive....

To bad they're in different weight classes. The Kameida's are all clowns, and this one here is no different. As far as boxing having its share of dirty boxers, northlondon, 'tis true; but in this case, its a whole FAMILY of boxers. Do the Klitschko's head-butt, gouge, or fight dirty? No, they just win championship belts. The Kameidas are well-known for their dirty tactics, and one of this dude's brothers was DQ'ed and banned for a year (Daddy for life) because he decided to be a pro-wrestler when getting his hat handed to him by the world's champ. The Kameida's a pretenders, not contenders....
