Nice shot. The long exposure gives the water a nice smooth look. Then the small aperture gives the lights a nice 'starburst' effect. Both help turn what might have been a decent night shot into something that stands out.

When I first looked at the photo, I thought there had been a major oil spill in the Kamogawa.

Pontocho is a dark narrow street with restaurants and private clubs that runs parallel to the river. If you walk thru it at night the air is filled with the faint sounds of laughter and karaoke. Very atmospheric.

Ah...a picture of the day, as opposed to a very recent example.

Now I know where I'm going when I get to Japan later this year.

rranta: Keep in mind that a few of these establishments are members only, but its still worth a visit.

This shot is vacant as photo-journalism. It doesn't show the warmth of the open terraces, the people, the sky... This is an "art" shot, to show the "current" of the river. A nice photo, but...

I like this shot.

Stunning! Haven't done any night shots in a while. This surely does motivate me to get out there and start shootin'

I agree that the photographer gave a lot of thought, on lens opening, speed & such to get a photo as eye-catching as that one. My compliments to the photographer.

I lived there for almost 5 years. It was a very crowded place on weekends and in summertime. Its the only real night life in Kyoto and it spans about a 2 square block radius from Karasuma to the river and Shijo to sanjo and a little beyond both North and South. The Hostesses on Kiiamachi are beautiful and friendly outside their clubs. Gion offers some nightlife as well but many of its bars are members only and its a bit more spread out and exclusive. Kyoto is a nice place to visit but I find life much more suitable for my tastes in Osaka and Kobe.

p.s. if you follow that river North up to Kamigamo, there is a beautiful, large outdoor shrine called Kamigamo jinja and you can picnic, put your feet in a brooke, walk up the hillside to a nice wooded shrine and the inside shrine is beautiful and huge. Its where they do the horse riding/archery every year. Anyway its easily accessible by subway or you can ride your bike or hike up the river. Just stay left when the river forks! At the very end of the city limits to the north is a waterfall and swimming hole in clean mountain Kamogawa water! people swim and bar b cue there all summer. Its a nice river, but by the time it reaches Chushojima after traveling through the city and past the Sake factories, the water is brown and Diiiiirty!

Beautiful magical lights in the darkness. Promises of warmth and welcome and smells of good food spilling over the icy cold black of the river.. the photo is inspirational!

Nice shot, brings back memories of my visits. Kyoto is absolutely the tourist city to visit in Japan if you only have a few days. One of the most photogenic cities in the world (in my top 10 anyway)

I agree with BurakuminDes - except that even just a few says does not give you enough time to explore the many treasures of Kyoto. A week is needed, minimum. But I think I could spend a lifetime!

The area looks completely peacefull and inviting. Thank you for the beautiful photo!

@pamelot. but what? you could take a better photo?

I really have to visit Kyoto some day. I'm really disappointed I didn't go there the first time I went to Japan. Oh well, as long as the passport is fresh I'd better keep using it.

Agreed ! It is actually a very tacky shot of Kyoto - and hardly does justice to the beauty of the city.

Great shot !!

Tokyochris, I really don't think the shot is HDR. If that was the case I think it would be a lot brighter overall. It's simply a long exposure shot with a small aperture setting.

Nice photo.

I kind of figured that might be the case. Yes, I will certainly try and visit it when I'm there. I'm making quite the list of places to see.
