I visited Kenrokuen last Autumn and it's fantastic. I also thought the huge torii gate near the JR station was pretty interesting - I've never seen one like that before!
steen,
Don't know if you are being serious about the ugly strings, but here goes. They're called yukizuri and they are used to protect the trees from the heavy snow that we get here in Ishikawa. They stop the branches from breaking.
Kenrokuen is famous for its yukizuri. Luckily we got some good snow yesterday and it was a great evening for the light up.

A fairy-like touch, beautiful.

My favorite place within this park is just beyond the left most branch, slender willow above quartered stone.

Very good photograph. I did not know a thing about the yukizuri, but that can make sense especially when snow is is heavy & wet.

This place is amazingly beautiful. I wanted to see it at night but they closed down the park around 5 or so when I was there.

Spectacularly beautiful. Without the yukizuri it would be just simply beautiful.
