Not so sure the Queen would be impressed by that recalcitrant Corgi.

I second that!

I took this picture, but "A cool looking dog" is not from me. Some japanese just go crazy with their dog's cosplay, poor dog...he couldn't remove the lasses as it was attached. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tonyleplusmieux/

Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not abuse, it really depends. In this pic... even though the owner went a little crazy with this stupid dress up. The dog doesn't seem to mind it. Some animals actually enjoy the pampering since it's getting them attention. However, on the flip side of the coin. I've seen once on a really hot day where this dogs was panting like crazy because the stupid owner was dead set on dressing the pet up. That they don't realize that they are about to give their dog a heat stroke because it's sooooooo Kawaiiiiii! to dress them up. My wife had to stop the old lady and tell her. "Look your dog's tongue is practically dragging on the ground. It's dehydrated and hot, you can kill your dog in this heat like that." The da** thing had a sweater and hat on during one of the hottest days of the year!! Know what she did? She looked at us like "How dare you criticizes me!!" and continued walking without giving a dang.

We personally don't mind a dog that wears a sweater or maybe even booties as it's even protected our old dog against broken glass or other hazards on the dirty streets. But only a little sweater or shirt and maybe boots when it permits, and if it doesn't bother the animal. After all it is an animal, not a toy.

Animal abuse.

Cool? The dog doesn´t think so. Pathetic idiots who do this to their pets.

yeah, that's me, so what's the point?

Hey man, it's better than pulling a Michael Vick!

Everytime I see one of those dressed doggies, etc I feel like whipping out my cel and calling the SPCA.

We got some "sick" people in my neighbourhood that overdo things with their pets. Like buying fancy(hand-made) pet-food from a shop down the road, to wheeling them around in prams, etc.

It is a Dog NOT a moving Barbie-doll.

Better, but still not necessary. Dogs are MOST loveable just the way they are!

Dogs have fur - that's why they don't need clothes. And what's with the sunglasses?? Pets are Japan's new kids for all the ara-za, ara-fo singles whom nobody wants to marry. Not only has this created a market for expensive dog/cat clothing and accesories, but also dog/cat bags and even - a dog stroller. Frankly speaking the way pets are ignorantly abused in Tokyo disgust me. Sure, kids would also love to be carried around all their life, but eventually it would make them obese and out of shape to get around on their own, and this is what is happening to these dogs - causing major health issues on their older years.

And, please, all dog owners, can you please NOT allow your dogs to sit by the table when you're at the restaurant, eat from your fork or chopstick, or even from your plate. It's extremely unhygienic, and pets and people were not made to share the same oral bacterias.

tokyotales -- Hear, Hear! My opinion is that these folks are simply starved for attention, so they use their dogs to try to get some. Have all of you seen the pathetic guy who hangs out almost every weekend day and holiday at the entrance to the subway in Omote Sando? (By the police box.) He always has his three miniature dachsund (?) dressed up in silly outfits -- just so folks will stop and screach "kawaii", and take pictures with their mobiles.

Sorry, some might disagree, but these people are showing their love for their dogs. Silly glasses and outfits don't equal abuse. All that counts is that the dogs are well cared for.

I think this is the third 'do wearing sunglasses and/or hat somewhere 'chic' in Tokyo' Picture of the Day.

(Big doggie-style) Yawn!

Awww, I think he looks cute. This dog is not walking around with his ribs poking out from starvation and foaming at the mouth, so it could be way worse...

paulinusa -- I think you confuse "desire to needlessly pamper" with love. Love is doing what is best for the dog, including lots of exercise and a good diet as the starting point. Carrying them in designer dog bags, and dressing them to look like people is not love. Affection and attention, yes. But not love. Love is about giving, rather than receiving, and, as I stated, I believe most of these folks do this only to receive attention.

Big dog lover, having grown up in a household surrounded by dogs (family has breed GR and Labradors for many years). At the same time, however, I cannot understand the fascination in this country in dressing up these spoiled pooches in ridiculous clothes that serve no real function.

Then again, our two dogs do get a rain coat on rainy days (namely because they are walked everyday, rail, hail, snow, typhoon, without fail).

My attitude to canine footwear and sunglasses, however, is a bit different. Back in Australia (where summertime temperatures can melt the road), I have seen guide-dogs decked out in booties to protect their feet. I have also seen a police German Shepherd with a cool set of shades to protect his eyes from glare.

Finally, I do think that some people use their dogs as a way to attract attention. Then again, having come across a huge number of poorly trained dogs and owners in this country, I think such people have their priorities wrong.

I've seen worse in Central Park.

this isn't a working dog, this is a fashion accessory. The dog can be thankful that its hair isn't long enough or else it would have been dyed or covered in toys

timorborder-- rain coats?? How thoughtful! And see, the booties and shades are important in those cases. I've seen people back in the states who just put a sweater on their dog when they went out for a walk, and this makes sense to me because some dogs are not good with cold weather. Yeah they have fur, but these were dogs that were bred in much warmer environments. Just like if you had a dog who had a huge thick coat for tough weather and then moved to southern Florida, wouldn't you want to get your dog a hair cut?

That said... yeah, most dogs I see dressed up with ridiculous outfits, it's obvious it's all about the owners. And I think it's disgusting when I see dogs being dyed ridiculous colors and their claws being painted and mess like that. But for this particular picture, this does not look that bad, honestly. He's on a leash and not in a baby carriage or something stupid, haha.
