An image of Yamato Tanooka, the missing 7-year-old Japanese boy, is displayed on a being sold at a railway station kiosk in Tokyo on Friday. Tanooka, who went missing nearly a week ago after his parents left him in a forest as punishment, was found Friday in a case that set off a nationwide debate about parental disciplining. Headline reads: "Taken into protective custody six days after being abandoned."

That boy is going to be a celebrity and rightly so. What he endured was more than most people could.

The very LAST thing this poor child needs is to be a celebrity. He needs normality, love and protection.

We are not in America, you know?

Lost and found, mystery or miracle? time will tell.

He may be cute and all, but remember his parents pushed him out of the car because he was throwing stones at people. The kid needs to be better behaved.

The important things is how will be the relation between the kid and the parents and what will be the effect of this incident on the child life, this family needs Teachers and experts cooperation in order to bring the child to a happy normal life.

I really hope these "parents" have learned their lesson... When I was growing up with an older and a younger brother, we were punished all right ! But NEVER in such a barbaric way... I'm just SO glad the little guy was bright enough to fend for himself. What worries me now is "what happens next" ???

Whether he's cute or not is neither here nor there. He's being raised by parents who apparently think shoving a child out of a car in the mountains and leaving him there is an appropriate way to stop him throwing stones earlier in the day. It doesn't work like that. You deal with bad behaviour as and when it happens, not later when you feel like it or - more like- when you're upset about something else and redirect your feelings onto the kid. That kind of 'discipline' doesn't teach kids to behave, all it teaches them is that it's appropriate to nag and whine and drag things out ad nauseum. Kids copy their parents.
Don't blame the boy.

Great headline JT, loves it!

I think the headline in the Japanese newspaper has been mistranslated.
"Hogo" here just means "saved" or "refuge" (i.e., found alive). I think "hakken" would imply he was "found" dead. It doesn't mean in "protective custody", which in English would imply he's been taken away from his family.

Nice to know the boy is safe but it is not news anymore.....

Nice to read some good news and a missing child story that has a happier ending.

It's wonderful that against the odds, the boy is safe and well. Although Yamato is only 7 years old, he is smart and resourceful which is more than can be said of his parents.

The amount of attention this story has gotten is nauseating.

Like some of the above said, yes were not in america/west but him becoming a celeb is it going to help him in any form other than financial? Boy could end up a proper space cadet if he gets pushed on the TV got enough to deal with like WTF his parents left him on a F in mountain. How about a chip i fund to send the family on a bonding trip to ...wherever ill stick 10,000 yen in no worries.

6 days is a lot of time. If the child has reconciled to himself his behaviour and looks at the rescue as a redemption to a new way of thinking then it's good.
If instead he comes back more belligerent than ever then not a bright future at all.
It'll come down to if these events straightened him out or if he'll feel justified in himself 6 days ago
