AKB48 singer Tomomi Itano, wearing a sexy animal print costume, walks with a lion in a commercial for Emobile's Pocket Wi-Fi device that connects to the 3G network automatically and works as a Wi-Fi access point and router. In the commercial, Itano says that “Emobile's Pocket Wi-Fi is the king of Wi-Fi," in a reference to the lion being the king of the beasts. See commercial here.

How is this photo and cutline news? How is displaying this photo any different from corporate promotion? Shouldn't this have a border around it with the word "advertisement" written on the border? If anyone can explain to me the news value of running this photo -- and bear in mind that you should think carefully about the words "news value" -- I would be delighted to hear your thoughts.

Nice thighs!

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Wow! That's beautiful!!...Oh..and Tomomi too.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Nice pussy cat.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

I dislike any CM that uses wild animals...maybe this is CG, but it makes no sense and I think they could have done it in a way that makes more sense without the use of wild animals

Spend less money on using these little girls and other idiots for your commercials and instead lower your charges.

Most on here are sick of AKB48. This is supposed to be a news site not a celeb gossip site.

11 ( +18 / -7 )

It's quite a funny commercial.

Does anyone know how good these Pocket Wi-Fi devices are?

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Does anyone know how good these Pocket Wi-Fi devices are?

as good as AKB48 :) disclaimer.

Does anyone know how good these Pocket Wi-Fi devices are?

As good as the tower location that supports them.

doesn't look like she can walk in those shoes from the picture...have not watched the CM

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The lion is so friendy and not hungry otherwise she was not dare to walk with that big cat.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

What a great way to start the day! I think it is important to keep completely updated on news about AKB48 and their members. Today, I know they are animal lovers. I can't wait for the next update! I hope it is soon!

0 ( +6 / -6 )

wow lot of people got up at the wrong side of the bed this morning. RAWR.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

@Mr. Sushi

Nice thighs!

As a spokesperson for the lions, I can tell you they do not appreciated being objectified like that.

;-)

7 ( +10 / -4 )

That's some lousy CGI.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

It is winter time.

Do not get one of those things. Asahi soda machines will soon be projecting free wi-fi

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Waste of money. As for this CM, I feel sorry for the lion.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

The botox girl is back... she has had so much surgery it's not funny

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Most on here are sick of AKB48 Oricon doesn't agree with you.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Any commercials seem to be very cheap, cheesy to use big role of animals such as dog, cat, duck, etc to promote the products. Animal is irrelevant to the product.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

gogogo, you're not lion.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

She looks great! Helping with my hangover this morning. You lot really make me laugh with your bitterness.

I don't know if the emobile portable wi-fi is any good - bur I do know that the DoCoMo LTE portable wi-fi IS very good, and very quick.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

How did they get the lion to walk in front of a green screen :)

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I think a tiger would have matched her costume better.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

What a great way to start the day! I think it is important to keep completely updated on news about AKB48 and their members.

Well, you could always avoid entering posts about AKB48. But the urge must be strong...

0 ( +3 / -3 )

That's a big cat! And Tomomi looks great!

"have not watched the CM"

Click on the "See commercial here."

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Cool, a lion! Oh... and one of those factory made pop girls.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Gr-r-reat!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The lion is more cute than the girl, (take note) in her left she is holding a bullwhip ( in america people will protest for animal cruelty for carrying a bullwhip not using it )

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

"The lion is so friendly and not hungry"

The lion is under Tomomi's complete and total control.

And I love how Tomomi's costume exposes her cute bellybutton!

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

I like how the lion roars his approval of the pocket Wi-Fi, and at the end of the CM, completely tamed by Tomomi, sits quietly on the floor.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

0 ( +3 / -3 )

I think a tiger would have matched her costume better.

except she is wearing leopard skin which also doesn't make sense

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I think they used the program Maya or another one similar. The Lion is actually computer generated.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Well, you could always avoid entering posts about AKB48

Why would I want to avoid something that I live for and look forward to every day?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

can we give thumbs up to photos on this site ?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The lion is a lion, and is accepted at "face" value...

Not so, "Pop" girls. They must be nipped, tucked, and remodeled, to be deemed acceptable merchandise...

Fixing teeth, yes, ok, but what is wrong with the natural looks of these young girls?

Thanks for the link, gogogo.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

How do you know thisn't computer generated trickery? The lion could have roaring in an empty room.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

As a matter of fact that "bark" could even be fake or doctored.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Newsman, not that I’m defending JT (I’ve had post removed far more than anyone here) however, this is the “Photo of The Day” and nothing more. It’s not there as news, but as displayed “Photo of the Day.”

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Would of been better with a real lion then a cowardly CG lion ^_^

2 ( +2 / -0 )

But it's from December! Though I suppose these pictures don't have to be recent.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The commercial is still showing on TV as well as in major retail outlets. That makes it current.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As a matter of fact that "bark" could even be fake or doctored.

They ain't lion?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Which is more fake? The lion with the CGI, or the girl with the plastic?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

smartacus, Okinawamike is right. Emobile only seems to have towers set up in major centers, so if you're bound to the kanto or kansai region, you're good but if you go anywhere else you're screwed.

I prefer docomo's because they are accessible over almost all of the country, and the speeds are the same.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

This photo is typical japanese sexism. It's about the cat.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

NinjaDave-Spend less money on using these little girls

Little girls? What little girls?

The lion is so friendy and not hungry

Lion? What lion? Oh, next to the thighs! Yes, I see it now.

Still can't spot any little girls though...

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Whoever does not see the blatant use of effects (i.e. the lion being doctored into the commercial instead of being on the scene) should really have their eyes checked.

Not only the eyes maybe - their common sense, too.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I don't get why her look in this photo is considered sexy. She looks like a little girl wearing bikini....

0 ( +3 / -3 )

She looks like a little girl wearing bikini....

May I suggest an eye exam?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And I thought it was the year of the dragon.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I would like to see her wail with that whip.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

unless the caption says "Lion in ads promo caused stir in so and so shopping mall", I hardly sees this as more than just and ads pic

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I like the compu anime

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Are they suppose to have the same color of hair?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Blatant rip off a Lion Bar advert....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Refreshing to see that Japanese advertising will always appeal to the lowest common denominator -- usually via some celeb of the moment. And to think people actually get paid to create this stuff.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Her fingers are in the way at the end.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I think the Japanese advertise for the Japanese consumer....not for the complaining Gainjins in this country. Don't hold your breaths because AKB48 will be around for a long time. Whenever you guys outspend the Japanese, maybe they will consider changing their spokespersons. It's a simple business decision.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

think the Japanese advertise for the Japanese consumer

Vernie -- duh, of course they do. But you are just confirming my point -- that Japanese advertising, all too often, appears to be written for teenage boys/men acting like them, with raging hormones. And that showing an under-twenty-five year-old female celebrity, with no connection to the product, in a skimpy outfit is enough to sell something.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Herefornow....do you think Japan is the only country that advertise that way? Don't be so naive.....The US and other countries been doing the same thing for many years. Japan is just following a trend that worked for other companies. I am not saying that I am agreeing with the tactics, but that just how thing works in this age and time.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I have an emobile wi-fi. Works great and cheaper than NTT.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Newsman,

How is this photo and cutline news? How is displaying this photo any different from corporate promotion?

I'm guessing you're relatively new to JT. "Photo of the Day" often will show photos that are not much more than advertising - especially if lingerie, legs, and/or cleavage are involved. That's why they put it in the "Photo of the Day section rather than the "National", "Crime", "Sports", "Politics" or "World" news sections. Wakarimashita?
