I think carrying that many golf balls in your umbrella, wet or dry, is more dangerous than a mere wet umbrella. Maybe they should lower golf fees if they don't want people playing on the platforms.

In general I like this overall ad campaign. Manners throughout Japan have steadily gone downhill since the economic bubble burst back in the 90's. Not sure if they are directly related but I have noticed the diff. Now if we can only get the platform staff to do more than just shove people onto the trains the whole riding experience may be more tolerable. Id also like to see JR staff do "walk throughs" during the off peak times to remind people to "hold" their bags in front of them or put them on the overhead racks. Reminders to shut off cell phones, sit closer, and turn down music would also be greatly appreciated... fat chance though eh !

From all the bad manners in the Tokyo train system they pick this one do a campaign on!?!? Who is the genius that came up with this? Someone that got splashed by an umbrella, obviously! What a complete waste of money!

Does a few potted (not pot) plants on the balcony count as a garden? Even then you'll bang your umbrella golf club into the rails I'm sure.

The Japanese should have thought things through a bit more before they decided to walk over from the mainland to this cramped space.

Is this just another example of "amae"? Japanese prefer to be treated like kids, I guess.

In Japan there are waaaay too many needless warning signs and stupid announcements at eardrum shattering decibles.

This series again?? Is JT going to make every new one (once a month) a picture of the day. Hope you got authorization to distribute them from Tokyo Metro.

I think one that warned people not to swing their umbrellas behind them while walking would be better. I've almost been impaled several times while going up stairs or in a tight crowd because some fool has been walking fast and stabbing his umbrella behind him. I would also have appreciated a "Take a shower in the morning" manners poster this summer. All those stinky oyajis who think you're fine if you take a bath the night before almost did me in with their bad b.o. on the crowded trains. Ick! Much more useful than the "Do it at home" campaign.

I think the pictures are charming and they get the message across.

Himajin is right, why the ads in English when it's about what the Japanese do on the trains? Do they think foreigners are assimilating their ridiculous habits?

These posters annoy me. The subtext is always "don't do anything out of the ordinary. Some gormless Oyaji in glasses might complain!"

Haha, good stuff. I remember seeing those tools in stations in Japan. I alsways got the impression that, rather than trying to perfect their swing, they were trying to say in that quiet humble Japanese yet painfully obvious way "HEY EVERYBODY! LOOK AT ME!!!! I'M A GOLFERrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Let's see, I hate my job, and I hate my fellow commuter, and I hate my prospects in life, as prices keep going up more than my salary. So naturally I won't be kind and cheerful and outgoingly respectful of other people. But LO! BEHOLD! A manners poster! Surely that will shape me up.

empossible - I totally agree with you. How about a 'Brush your teeth in the morning stinky breath' poster. Bad B.O is one thing, but bad B.O and warm sh*t breath right in your face on a crowded train isn't much fun either....
