I thought it was illegal to talk on the phone and ride a bike at the same time.

Hahahah welcome to Japan

Yeah dangerous. Call the cops and give her a ticket.

Is there anything constructive about posting such a picture?! I thought talking on the keitai while on a bicycle was illegal?! Is it not? This is a really bad example and the woman is a complete fool. She could hurt somebody. The previous picture was much better. Slow news today I guess.

King-size shoulder bag !

What this picture says to me is: the government needs to pass a law to force all cell phone makers to integrate hands free sets into the phones. You can buy hands free sets, but they are clunky. If you could just grab your phone and real out a hands free set, who would fail to use it?

But instead, seems all phones have a GPS in them. Go figure.

One thing I have always wondered. Is it legal, in Japan, to be taking photos of people like this and then posting it to the web? I thought there was a privacy law against this that would require a mosaic?

ssway - everyone in Japan has rights... Until you try to enforce them..

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Cool! The ride's downhill, both ways!

How about someone about she is breaking the law, talking on your cell phone is a nono on a bike and technically you are not allowed to have anything hanging from your handle bars either.

I can't think of any image more stereotypical than a Japanese talking or texting on a cell phone. I went downtown today and probably saw at least 1,500 of them doing the same thing. The dumbest one of all was in Asakusa, where I saw one talking on his mobile while riding in a jinrikisha. What's the point here?

where's the bicycle helmet ?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

if the numbers in the background crashed, that would suck... If she crashed, meh...

Shouldn't her face be blotted out according to our privacy laws?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

"our" ?

I have a question j4pnFTW: Do you claim to be Japanese?

That's it :)

笑わせるなー The laws in our country are nothing but a joke. Who cares about her face anyway? Japanese go overseas and take pictures of people and you don't see them placing mosaic on their faces, right? Treat as you like you be treated. It's ridiculous to try to tell people to do something when YOU know it's not even enforced in this country. Privacy laws? They only protect CRIMINALS, not the common folk like you and me.

She looks fit.

I like her phone.

Looks like stocks are up!

She's breaking the law in broad daylight and on a public throughfare, so I would imagine she would have a hard time claiming her "privacy" was violated. What would be funny is if someone who knew her recognized her in this photo and turned her in to the local keisatsu.

you can't tell if she's moving or not...she might have stopped cycling to answer her cell phone

I agree with billyshears... it is hard to tell if she is moving or not. If you look at the reflection on the mirror and the background in general, there is little discernable motion blur. Of course the camera could have been an amazing one.

@BlueWitch

Ironically, today on my lunch break I saw a woman riding her bicycle, chatting on her cell in one hand and having a cigarette in the other while maneuvering so well through the crowds. It blew my mind away, having said that, the J-police really need to ticket these people and stop BSing around, in fact, if they were to do that, They'd probably need to hire more people working 12 hour-4 day shifts.

She's on the phone yelling SELL SELL SELL

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yes, it is illegal to use a phone while cycling. You can be fines up to 40,000 yen.

Going by just the picture it's hard to tell, but the caption for the photo says, "A woman cycles past..."

I can't get too interested in the possibility that she's breaking the law, as it's so common here, and despite pretty nasty accidents in front of koban, the police are disinterested. What I would say though is that the 'Picture of the Day' seems to be getting more ... mediocre as a photographic/photojournalism page?

I saw many people doing the same on the streets... In most of cases, it will be a school girls... I think Japanese are addicted to mobile phones... Let me describe an interesting scene which I often see in trafic islands (Signal is Red)

"A car (Driven by a young man and a beautiful girl (Girlfriend/Wife) sitting in next seat) ran in to trafic island and stops for the Green signal. Immediately after stoping the car the driver picks his mobile phone and start messaging... :( Young lady is already in the middle of something with her mobile phone..."

This is not only the case of one or two... This is the case for most of people... - This scene is so common when I walk on the roads... What is bothering me is, when I look at the beautiful drivers (girls), they never look back... :(

If I were the driver what I would do, or want to do is, I would have a small chat with companion... Look around if there is some nice cars... I will make some comment about cars waiting for green signal... In some situation about passengers inside other cars also.. lol :)

I guess those who are so addicted to the mobile phone is missing many beautiful scenes in their life...

I guess many of you (readers) are also like that... so do watch this link... cheers... ( ^ _ ^ )

I agree-posting photos of people breaking the law has what purpose ?

The rise of people crashing whilst using mobile phones is on the increase and does inconvenience other road users.
