And this is another reason why the Abe masks are completely pointless. I see custom made and handmade masks everywhere now. Anyone can make them, and almost all of them are nice than the Abe mask. We are giving ours to the homeless, if even they need them. At 400 yen each, as well - the whole thing is a disgrace and he should be embarrassed (if he actually has any sense of shame).

It seems people are enjoying making and wearing colorful masks amid pandemic. They may have nothing else besides making colorful ones at home as they can't go out.
Maria
Where are they selling them? Is there a link?
Mocheake
Are they N-95?
mountainpear
@Mocheake I am sure they aren't. Only medical personnel need N95 masks. It would be wasteful for people in the street to have them. And they are extremely uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time.
gogogo
These people needs to socially distance.

@gogogo
Exactly. It’s clear that many people in Japan have a false sense of security because of wearing masks. This pictures is a prime example of no social distancing because of the belief that masks completely prevent transfer of infection. This is precisely why viral spread in Japan continues to rise quickly.

Why are they being sold? Why not a generous gift to build a community?

You expect these elderly people - the most at risk after all - to pay for their own materials, packaging, and possibly shipping, spend time and energy making the masks, and then give them away to the complaining slackers who can't be bothered to make their own and will undoubtedly complain about the efficacy and quality of these?
Make your own damn masks.
