What a great photo. It reminds me of traditional Japanese art, as you might find painted on fusuma doors or a byobu screen.

No, they are not fighting. The photo is a little misleading. I just produced a video about the tancho, the red-crowned cranes, called "Dance of Devotion". It will be published next week at nippon.com. The whole sequence which includes the jumping into the air is some of the most graceful things you'll ever see.
