Melon season

The Japanese need to wake up. Fruit is very expensive in Japan compared to other countries. Is there a monopoly on fruit? Some hidden interests of political parties and businesses? I find that it's best to buy jellied fruit and bananas!

Way too expensive for what they are.

You can pick one up for 800 yen, which might seem pricy, but for a family of 4, it's a perfect dessert.

Also, compared to melons in North America - or most other fruit for that matter - the quality is much better, and prices are more or less the same now. Farming in North America is mostly a corporate, big business activity now. Taste and nutrition are not a part of the equation. It's all about crop yield, profit margins, increasing shelf-life through genetic engineering, etc.. The last cantaloupe I ate in Canada tasted like cardboard.

zichi-the farmers growing them don't get rich in this business. it takes a lot of handwork and resources to get you the melon on your table.
