I remember the rendezvous games and "we're mates" cough cough thing or just meeting up along side pretending when I was on the USS Indy... we always kinda looked at each other and said "these guys actually flew kamekazes into our carriers back in the day...hey look that dude he's picking his nose, is that the skipper?"... I swear this website is just all irony and perhaps that's why I like to hit it up. I think a --B48 should do a KEEN SWORD show on the brow for both countries. Those boats are so very close together. This looks like the Japanese boat is possibly trying to ram the American ship, similar to a still shot from the Senkaku Island video of the CHinese and Japanese boats playing around.

It is a pretty nice shot, though.

Rather than joining the largest-ever military drills with the U.S. which is against our Constitution and will only increase tension in the northeast Asia, Japan should urge the U.S. to keep the agreement of 1994 which the U.S. and North Korea concluded in Geneve so that they can find their ways to denuclearization and eventual reunification of the Korean peninsula through a peaceful process.

If you erase the comments about the Chinese Zheng He, then please erase comments about Korea. Thank you.

In case anybody is wondering what is happening here - The GW was delivering fuel to the Ikazuchi through a procedure called connected replenishment. That is why the two ships are so close. As for size diffecnce . . . no kidding. The GW is a carrier. The JMSDF ship is a frigate. The fact that the picture was taken from the GW's signal bridge only adds to the size differential. It was nice to see the crew of the Ikazuchi wave to us when they separated.

There are even a few JMSDF Sailors onboard. Good people.

If she's of the Marusame class, she's got some teeth with the MK 41 VLS, SSM-1 launcher and the SH-60J Seahawk. Nice looking design.

"Connected Replenishment"? Back in my day (400 or so years ago) we called it an "UNREP" (UNderway REPlenishment). It's a very touchy maneuver and needs to be practiced (like they are in these maneuvers) so that collisions don't happen. Unlike a car where you can just swerve away from side-swiping another car, ships turn by swinging their stern TOWARDS the object they're trying to get clear of. If you drift too close to the other ship, the only way you can get clear is put the pedal to the metal and get your stern clear of the other ship's bow before executing the turn away. It creates a serious "pucker factor" for the sailors on-deck.

The Korean (as well as the Japanese) fleets were brown water navies. Tsushima to the South Korean coast is a mere 40 miles.
