A worker holds a used mobile phone collected for the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project at a recycling facility in Tokyo on Tuesday. The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee plans to manufacture approximately 5, 000 gold, silver and bronze medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games from from consumer electronics such as used mobile phones.

This is a great idea, even if symbolic. I read that the targeted quantity of gold and other metals will only cover a proportion of the total needs (maybe half or so?), but still it's a great piece of environmental PR. A much-needed victory for the organisers.

I've about 5 lying around the apartment.  Any info about where I can send them?

I think I've heard that you can sell your old PCs or mobile phones to companies who mine the precious metals inside... anyone have any information about doing that? Or is getting someone to take it for free the best you can expect?

Striker10: This is just a gimmick, there is so little gold in mobile phones or electronics it costs more to process and mine it than it is worth.
