It is part of our culture to not show signs of affection in public. We don't need them in order to demonstrate how we feel. A simple glance is enough.
And yet oddly enough everytime I go out I meet Japanese men and women in desperate need of a good hug and even asking me for it! I have lived on 5 continents and I have never encountered a country in more desperate need of a good hug than Japan.
Spreading gems....? Probably it just me, I prefer people to stay at least an arm's length from me when we carry a conversation unless that person is a family member.
She's attractive and seems to like what she is doing. She probably wouldn't have much of a problem doing other "things" for money, if she'd kiss for free.
I don't think this is appropriate in Japan. It is part of our culture to not show signs of affection in public. We don't need them in order to demonstrate how we feel. A simple glance is enough.
"Free Hugs Campaign" they have a website or just wiki it. The hugs are meant to be random acts of kindness, performed just to make others feel better. Not sure on the "Kisu free" thing...... maybe she is just trying to one up everyone.
Let's see: Kiss her cheeks full of blotched makeup/caked make-up.
The guy's funky armpit hugs.
They both have been out there suffering from bad breath.
The best things in life aren't free. What's the catch?
2 seconds later...
HONEY, do you know where my keys are? Oh, thank you dahlin. MUAHHHH!
I'm happy with the "bird in hand."
I'll bet that during the daytime no guys would take her up on the offer, but come night time after a few drinks at the izakaya and they'll be lined up for blocks! Probably some with cash in hand too. Great idea for raising donations for Tohoku.
This post made my morning!! LOL Thank you my friend... I wish I could do the same down here in Tsukuba..Too many stone-faced people walking around. Needing some LOVE desperately!... (-_-)
Ha ha, Hugs is probably Willy the whale's barnacle sidekick. Free Hugs and Willy.
I think they are part of an international raver cult. I saw a similar setup before Christmas in Namba, Osaka a couple of years ago. The girl--Asian--had a santa hat, and the guy (bodyguard/boyfriend/pimp?) just hung around in the background holding his sign. I saw an entire group of junior high school boys on a school excursion get hooked up with free hugs--the best example of Christmas cheer that I've seen in Japan (yes, it beats munching on KFC at home).
Whats the point? Just trying to prove that gaijin are friendly. Or perhaps they are feeling isolated and are trying to break out of their lonely shells.
They were there (dressed the same) about a month ago. Same overcast sky. This might be a photo from that day. Lots of people were getting the cheek kiss and/or the bear hug. And then a handful of supporters ran around getting the kissee/huggees to sign a waiver. It was all being filmed. Not sure what for. Some friends of mine signed the waiver, but I didn't think to ask them if it gave any information. Too many other things to do on a Sunday afternoon in Harajuku/Yoyogi Park.
What if one of those satanic death breath salarymen from the morning commute took her up on her offer... Eww! She would be scared for life. If you live in Tokyo you know exactly what I am talking about.
Good for them. In the middle of this extremely crowded but isolating and lonely city, someone is offering a little human warmth and compassion. We could use a lot more people who take time out to share some humanity.
Attractive blonde in Japan offering a kiss ( probably every Japanese guy's fantasy) and the question is how many Japanese men will get up the nerve to do so.
I'll bet that during the daytime no guys would take her up on the offer, but come night time after a few drinks at the izakaya and they'll be lined up for blocks! Probably some with cash in hand too. Great idea for raising donations for Tohoku.
@Borscht... it's pretty obvious she combined the two as if she doesn't know much Japanese... she put Kisu in Romaji then put free in normal English... nothing is misspelled and it is correct... and since i live in America and English is my language.... no GABA instructor needed
If she's using romaji for katakana, 'free' is misspelled. If she's using English, like the man is, 'kisu' is misspelled. As she's using Japanese grammar, I suspect it's 'free' that's in error. Well, that's my indepth analysis anyway; more after consulting with a GABA instructor.

As usual, gay men and straight women get a raw deal here.

Kaminari,
I see people going into soapies that pay for hugs (so I am told). Perhaps more comes with those?
kaminarioyaji
I don't understand - who ever paid for a hug? :-S

It's a social experiment: would there be more girls taking the Free Hug from a guy, or would there be more guys taking the Free Kisu from a girl?
alladin

This is a test of manhood..are you man enough to owe up to your spouse with the scent of another woman on you?
I consider myself strong but..not that strong ;-(
Free man hug it is!
TheQuestion
Well, if you're offering.
BoratLikeBarry
This is completely misunderstood - she's clearly offering Kisu, the fish. I hope it's tempura.

If you consider the thousands of young women in Harajuku on a Sunday, the reaction to a good looking foreign guy might have been more entertaining.

Kiss please!

wanderlust - Sharing the "love", so to speak.

Hope she has some disinfectant wipes nearby. Who knows what could be passed on and shared...
