Mirai Nagasu has dual nationality (under 22, parents are both Japanese) and team Japan has been trying to get her to join them, but since she was born and grew up in the US has option to stay with team USA.
There was some controversy in the 2014 Winter Olympics she qualified for the Olympics, but instead sent Wagner (who actually placed 4th behind Mirai). Wagner of course choked during the performance, which some say cost the US a higher medal.
