'Omotenashi Bras'

Models present lingerie maker Triumph's new concept bra, the "Omotenashi Compact Bra," in Tokyo on Thursday. This year's bra focused on the Japanese spirit of "omotenashi" (meaning service to guests with warm-hearted hospitality), which has been drawing increasing attention around the world as a key Japanese characteristic, the company said. The characters on the bras read "sincere heart."

My wife needs one of these for XMAS. Can I still be considered a guest?

meaning service to guests with warm-hearted hospitality

So can we expect now to see these on women working in places that service guests?

This is lingerie?? They look like they're made out of paper mache.

Models are sweet though.

Well looking at those two women in those bra's makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

That is a nice picture to start the day. Good morning everyone!!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Bras + omotenashi? Brings weird images to mind. Also, I am getting tired of that word.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

There are more than four things that I like about this photo.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I saw a pair of little hand between two sphere, what is the purpose ?

Now that "Mottainai" and "Kizuna" are household words around the world, "Omotenashi" will be next.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I am still confused. who will be going to use it ?

The characters on the bras read “sincere heart."

ok but as a guest what I am suppose to do ?

Nice bellybuttons!

Or so some people would like to think.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

Are we allowed to take them off? So.. inviting.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I am disinclined to check this site at work (which is the only time I look at it, during breaks), if this kind of picture is used.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

This is disgusting and done in poor taste!

"which has been drawing increasing attention around the world as a key Japanese characteristic..."

Not really. I've asked friends around the world if they're heard the words "mottainai", "kizuna", or "omotenashi" and none of them had heard any (well, one seemed to recall hearing "mottainai" when the African woman won the Nobel a few years back, but had no idea what it means). If they had the panties to go with it, bras MIGHT help a little, but to be honest they're pretty awful (the ladies cute, though).

5 ( +11 / -6 )

I sincerely "heart" these undergarments.

You have good eyesight. I was distracted by the merchandise on display.

@Maria I was waiting for a bus. Wouldn't get me fired but still a little embarrassing.

JT, I do like the picture but maybe you should have a special section. I'm not suggesting you become a porn site but how about a fashion section or something?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Splendid picture. I suggest making it picture of the day every day from this day forth. Until the next triumph comes along.

As for the tears about the ooh nature of this picture, how hard is it to explain to any prying eyes that this is a news site, that this is news, and that if had they read the newspaper or watched tv this morning would know the content. Them watch them scamper, or fawn over you for keeping up to date with the news. Then analyse this latest triumph by the water cooler or vending machine.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

They look like they were made from recycled cardboard. Definitely not the sexiest lingerie I've ever seen...

8 ( +9 / -1 )

It wasn't explained so well above, but this is the company's annual "light-hearted" publicity stunt. It is more like a parody of the "Kanji of the Year".

For those getting their knickers in a knot about seeing a tastefully shot image of two women in costume, get over it. There is much worse on the train advertising (soft porn magazine ads). And then you have the sensational headlines with much harsher words.

You'd be hard pressed to find any "normal" Japanese who would find it offensive.

But the "bra" is pretty ugly.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

why does omotenashi need bras?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Ahh, Thanksgiving came a day late this year

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

“omotenashi” which has been drawing increasing attention around the world as a key Japanese characteristic

Really? Says who? More self-deluded navel-gazing.

WTH, and it's printed on bra. WOW

homeland: Now that "Mottainai" and "Kizuna" are household words around the world, "Omotenashi" will be next.

Please tell me you're being sarcastic.

marcelloz: For those getting their knickers in a knot about seeing a tastefully shot image of two women in costume, get over it.

I wouldn't be able to say this with certainty, but I just don't think that either Maria or jpn_guy work on trains, so your comment as to how there's basically soft core porn on train advertisements is as irrelevant as your admonishment for them to "get over it" is rude. They both mentioned clicking on the site at work. Neither said they work on trains.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Cute girls, maybe nice tatas, but the bras?? Quite lame!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

The3 bras say "Ma-Gokprp"/ (Sincerity) reading girl's right bra to left bra. Motenashi IN jpanese is hospitality or entertainment - not necessary with sincerity. I

I do not understand those complaining about the pic re work... ? Are your workplaces so conservative? From the top pg of JT, the pic comes out pretty small size. It is also impossible to tell at a distance if it is a dress, bra or bathing suit. It is only in your face if you click on the actual article, imo, which is of course your own fault. Plenty of regular news sites/ paper mags have photos of world events, sports, fashion, music, where an attractive woman (or man!) has somewhat revealing clothes. Furthermore they ALL have advertising w/ photos far more suggestive (than this PR event shot) in them, so what's the problem? Anyway everyday it is a different pic, sunsets, city lights, children, etc. Once in awhile it is fashion or entertainment. Not a big deal?

If it really is a prob, why not just set your favorites to like the political section of JT, and then you can surreptitiously click to check the top pg of JT when no-one's around.

Oh yeah, and I like the one on the right. The concept of her and motenashi together is a nice one!

Moderator: Correction ---- Ma-gokoro that has nothng to do with motenashi

Thank you Japan Today. Today it is Friday and I see this beautiful picture. I'm in love. I'd take both. This picture is better than those boring politician pictures or the olympics that no one cares. That was good! CHEERS!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

...weird.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

They haven't even got a cuppa tea to offer a body never mind a jaffa cake, so what's all this about motenashi?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Can I get this for my wife at Narita?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Japan needs to be careful emblazoning outcrops with messages of hospitality - others may lay claim to them.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Wonderful example of "omotenashi" - lots of padding disguising little substance.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

This is why I LOVE Japan, Women are NOT AFRAID to be Women.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

strange gimmick to sell bras which look more like cave women swimsuits!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh, no. Not another Christmas holiday in the UK being endlessly bombarded with 'mottainai', 'kizuna' and now 'omotenashi'. My mother thought kizuna played for Man Utd.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@globalwatcher: I've already sent her the set for Xmas - on board a 787.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Bra is ugly. Skirt look cheap. Maybe hands between the bra is easy snap off for great hospitality though. 8-)

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Get yer ya-yas out!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

By the way 真心 is magokoro, sincere heart or sincere devotion.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Don't get too excited my friends, those bras are stuffed. I saw it on the news last night. Collapsible cups and hand towels are stored in the bras to be used when attending to guests.

Those are two extremely beautiful women.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

right bra letter is Ma meaning 'Honto" used in Shinken na. Left letter is "Kokoro; not used as heart attack but heart used in 'Your cheating Heart: Together, Magokoro. Not devotion (kenshin)Bra makers meant not anatomical heart. I don't think makers meant bra users use their two breast to motenashi suru males. Nixe idea, though. if they change designs maybe they can dominate USA markets that are full with Made in China and made in Japan bras.

I'm hoping it's hi-tech bra clasp that works like the 'Clapper' except in one direction only "Clap Off"! :p

2 ( +2 / -0 )

just have to wonder how much is padded and how much is real!?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

wtfjapan: just have to wonder how much is padded and how much is real!?

Most and very little.
