A dentist demonstrates on a dental patient robot at Showa University in Tokyo on Thursday. The humanoid female robot was developed to give practical experience for dental students and can be used for examinations. The 157-cm-tall robot displays autonomous action of physiological phenomenons such as eye and tongue movement and can be controlled by either original programming or an instructor using an external touch panel, the university said.

Is it me or is she actually holding a remote to the ceiling television?? Wow, they have taken the realism thing to new hights with this robot.

Yamada: "Sensei, I cannot work while this thing's stare is creeping me out!"

Sensei: "Endure Yamada-kun! as a dentist you must be able to cope with patients of all appearances. If you work in a practice anywhere in Meguro, almost every grown man looks like that!

This is ridiculous. Most normal places will just give free dental service in exchange for letting some students practice on you.

To spend all the time, money, and effort to build a robot for this purpose is a bit misguided. But then again, I guess by focusing on building useless expensive robots that can bow to prime ministers and get international press, Japan can pretend they are making real progress.

And when they've finished, they simply deflate and put her back in the chief dental surgeon's storeroom for days when he wants to practice his, er, fillings. At least she wouldn't complain about the three weeks for one here.

Japan is robot crazy. Next we will see a robot built...for a robot!

I wonder if the robot can be used for anything else besides practicing dentist work????

Get that tiger tooth

I'm already afraid of the dentist. Now imagining someday having a smiling robot dentist looking down on you makes it even better.

bamboohat, could you tell me your definition of "normal places" within this context?

"Glad they found OTHER uses for those dolls."

Glad to see that at least 1 poster thought of another use for this "doll" other than medical uses.

My goodness the doll looks so scary...

Agree with kumasan1969. It is freaky. Same level as Chucky or just a bit less.

places that don't use wig wearing robots that stare at you

Indeed.

I used to get all my dental care for free in England by going to a training clinic. The service I got was fine, and good practice for the students.

Still, when in Rome, and all that...

Poor hygiene control. The robot should be wearing safety goggles when they're working in the open mouth. I doubt the robot would sue, but if the intent is to get the students used to the entire procedure, then they should be doing the ENTIRE PROCEDURE.

Bah robot "patients" are normal at med schools. My first aid training started with dolls, then moved on to actual people. Surgeons and physiologists have even more fun since instead of robots they get to study using cadavers.

can be controlled by either original programming or an instructor using an external touch panel,

Perhaps they could come up with a Kobayashi Maru scenario to truly test the budding tooth collectors with a no-win situation.
