I can understand people wearing those long sleeved swimming tops out in the sun but what I don't get is why people wear them at indoor pools these days?

A standing room only pool? No thanks. The thought of wading through all that urine doesn't appeal to me.

But urine is sterile.....

LoL. . . Reckless said, "norovirus"

@tessa. Good one!

The water is tested hourly in public bathing areas in Japan. I would have no worries about the water quality in Japan.

And if the water is tested and found to be contaminated, then what? All the people are ordered out of the pool, until the water is cleaned? I've never heard of that happening.

@yubaru

Your septic tank? As long as you provide sterilized goggles, I'm good to go. Need 50+ sunblock though. Would just hate to skin cancer.

Too many people. My son who works as part-time as a licensed swimming instructor/life guard outside his school could tell you all the gross stories he had seen in a pool. It was funny for me though.

Shame on posters for being so judgemental.

Shame on you for shaming those that are being judgmental!

Those pool players aren't thinking urine-fest, just having some fun

Please feel to swim in my septic tank, it's pretty much the same thing.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

ewwwww..... no...

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Shame on posters for being so judgemental. Those pool players aren't thinking urine-fest, just having some fun. Could it be that the germaphobe population is higher than average among JT posters? Beware the keyboard my friends. It is a metropolis in terms of bacteria and other fun things.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

How many of those people urinated in that pool, ewwwwww!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Adults and kids cooling off in the p-p-pool (with extra pee in it)

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Dear god, I can't imagine how foul that water would be..

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I am so bloody disgusted by all of these male chaunavinstic comments, like check out all of these dirty easy to pick up Japanese chicks etc..I bet the they will go to bed with any WHITE DUDE with half a decent heart pulse and a bit of warmth in their body temperature. People just want to ESCAPE from the HEAT, if you have MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people in the TOKYO area, what the heck do you all expect???

1 ( +5 / -4 )

wow boys, calm down.... Are the girls in this shot THAT Hot??

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If this what you get used to in your life, then guess it is an ok way to cool down. not for me. Prefer the pool at the Okura or New Otani

2 ( +2 / -0 )

With girls that THOSE around, I would HARDLY be IN the pool...OMG.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Defeinitely don't want to go in that water

People swim in a giant pool

Swim? JapanToday should refer to the definition of swimming in the dictionary. Those people are at best wading in water.

And I would really be interested to know what kind of defect in the brain would push people to conglomerate so miserably in a child pool with balloons hitting their face, dudes with their clothes (which tells a lot on the hygiene level...) and all around women wearing ugly swimming suits. What's even the point?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

These "swimming pools" with MASSIVE overcrowding are very unsafe, where I am from they would never allow numbers like that in a pool very dangerous

And of course nasty to boot, no way in hell you would catch me at one of these cesspools.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Hmmmm.. Imagine all the chikanning that gioes on in a pool like that.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The beach? I can understand, and even then don't want to bear the crowds. No way I would ever go to a pool like this in summer, hot or not. There is no way that can be fun.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Annual 'Crowded-pool-in-Summertime-Tokyo' photo. Check.

Photo of salarymen in downtown Tokyo carrying their suit jackets and mopping their brows sure to come soon.

seriously youd have more fun sitting in your bathtube at home, probably more room to move. the whole idea of going to the pool.beach is to spread out and relax in relative peace. theres enough stress with work duing the week than to add a trip to the local pool, if you can get a car park, to add to it

@jerseyboy. Must be nice having your own clean pool. Too bad japanese homeowners do not have that bragging right. I miss private pools. The pool in the pic above is just a giant piss-pot.

0 ( +3 / -4 )

Or you can buy an inflatable pool and have fun on your balcony / roof like I did with my kids yesterday.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I won't comment, since if I say anything along the lines of what the vast majority of folks here have said, it would be "Japan bashing". But, either of those gals is more than welcome at my in-ground pool here in the states.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Nope. You'd not find me in that pool. Too many folks.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Ever since going to Okinawa, I never stepped foot in a pool or beach in Honshu because of this very scene. The good thing about Okinawa too is you can swim from about February through October and flights are cheap outside of summer via Peach or Jetstar. All hail Okinawa!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Yabaru your statement seems to be referring to the water quality and not to how crowded the pool is. So I have to say that it is a western habit of urinating in pools and bathing area,s used for relaxing. The water is tested hourly in public bathing areas in Japan. I would have no worries about the water quality in Japan. But it is the crowd that worries me. How long would it take for the lifesaver on guard reach a person drowning in the middle of that pool? This is a accident waiting to happen.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Hahaha yes, a different kind of "Spring Break" or rather Summer Break, school's out. Been there done that! You don't need to put on suntan lotion, you get plenty rubbed on by squeezing through the crowd. Yuck! Standing room only in the pool too. Whata hoot!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Just got back from a beautiful beach on the Big Island, no crowds and 2 to 3 foot waves , do I miss going to Toshimaen amusement park............. no way

1 ( +2 / -1 )

From my experience, better stay at home and enjoy your Bathtub. If you already decided to go there them do not brings your Kids (If any) with you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow! They're packed in like sardines. Well, as I'm not so young, I'd rather have some cold chuhai and nibbles in my air-conditioned room.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Nice one, the face of the girl on the right says it all, "why are you taking my photo you perv"

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I like to visit my cities Sports Centre it has 2 pools one indoors and one outdoors, never that crowded and as a resident I pay 200yen per 2 hours, son is 100yen.

Anyone checked the entry prices for adults at Summerland, Toshimaen, etc?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Life in Tokyo - even my caged hamsters have more room to around in....

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Thanks but no thanks, ill rather enjoy the ice cold rivers in the mountains

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Tubes and guys is like...so odd.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I was at a water park once, can't remember which, and watched a child going down a small slide trailing feces behind him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A very public golden shower.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

BTW, I'm feeling sexually harassed by that woman's cleavage.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So many people are wearing clothes and hats in the pool. And one lady is even showing off her smartphone sealed in a waterproof case. Strange.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

A standing room only pool? No thanks. The thought of wading through all that urine doesn't appeal to me.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Are gaijins with tattoos allowed to the pool?

There are signs outside Toshimaen saying no tattoos allowed, which includes both the water park and the amusement park.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Or you could take some cold showers at home and watch a movie....

9 ( +10 / -1 )

At least they can get SOME relief from this heat, but If you think that's bad, these kinds of pools in China are 3 times as packed.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

No thanks for a crowded pool... yukkkk.

1 ( +2 / -2 )

Are gaijins with tattoos allowed to the pool?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Germy crowded looking mess.

5 ( +5 / -2 )

I for one would NOT want to swim in that water. Beating the heat? No thank you.....ya'll can have it!

7 ( +10 / -4 )

I think you might struggle to actually "swim" in that pool.
