I too am pretty white and an SPF 30 applied regularly throughout the day is more than enough to keep me pasty white if I'm out in the sun all day. The women with the dark sleeves in summer just crack me up though. It's a complete failing of logic. If you're really worried about tanning/sunburn, just wear a long sleeved shirt!

And yeah, vitamin D deficiency. I guess many of these women have never heard of it. I notice I get pretty down in the dumps in the winter here, but a good dose of sunshine seems to sort me out. Vitamin D deficiency is a bigger problem than many of us care to realise.

does anyone know if Japanese women have Vitamin D deficiencies?

There was a feature on telly a while back that investigated the fact that many Japanese ladies are far too skinny, allowing themselves as little as 1500 calories a day, or less - for years. Stands to reason they have lots of deficiencies.

But, covering themselves up from the sun - who does it harm? Why all the hate? So long as I'm not expected to cover up and sweat with them, others can wear whatever they like as far as I'm concerned.

As for Why don't they just used sunscreen - if they're outside long enough to watch a couple of tennis matches, sunscreen just isn't going to do it. The effect fades after an hour or so at the most and you either have to slap it all on again, or get burned (voice of experience speaking).

How is it not good?

I mean... sigh... Is this really something that a really good SPF can't take care of? I am the whitest person who has ever lived and if I throw on some SPF 30 before I head out I come back as pasty as ever. I don't want to judge people for what they wear but if you ask these people why they're doing it, 99% will say it's because they don't want to tan. This just seems like dipping into the paranoia part of the spectrum and that's not good for anybody.

Have you never heard of preventative measures?

I am simply concerned for their health & well-being. If the sun is so dangerous (or more likely they're just so worried about getting a tan), then they should just stay out of it completely instead. I severely doubt that even 1% of the people here who behave like that have any serious medical conditions necessitating it.

I find it weird when really old ladies riding bikes cover their hands and wear a uv visor. It is all over already. Do not worry about the looks of your skin.

as long as there is no harm done to others, their choice of what to wear

These people should all be embarrassed to be seen in public like that.

We should all be embarrassed that they have to. We've sold out the safety of our sun for the sake of convenience.

You should see these older ladies playing tennis in the summer. I guess it is better to sweat to death than add a little color to the face.

WilliB: "Firstly, how do you know they are ladies? Special X-ray vision?"

While it's suddenly nice to see you suddenly developing some PC, especially in regards to people who completely cover themselves, if you think any of those are men I think you haven't been in this nation for more than a few minutes. And I don't think x-ray vision would help much -- new airport security screening devices where you can still see the junk would, though.

"Secondly, even you might say something if they went to bank like this or demanded to have their drivers license photo taken like this. No?"

Or I might just say something like that to someone who often discriminates against people who often cover themselves up for religious or other reasons but under the guise of 'safety', and then proves it by saying it's perfectly okay in this case.

In any case, given these people dress the same way in peak summer, it's no wonder why so many suffer from heatstroke or are the cause of accidents while riding bicycles, etc.

Why? We have to check with you now to see what's appropriate to wear in public?

Guess they haven't heard of the invention of sunscreen lotion haha

The sunscreen in Japan is horrible. Full of ethanol. you can get wasted on it. But don't put it on your skin!

Just stay inside if you have that big a problem with sun exposure. These people should all be embarrassed to be seen in public like that.

My friend has lupus. She has to be super careful of sun exposure. She will sit and watch a baseball game like this. No one else has a problem with it.

I see the cosplay fans of the new Star Wars series are already out in force! They've got the "Tusken Raider/Sand People" look down pat!

On an aside, given all the attempts to cover skin does anyone know if Japanese women have Vitamin D deficiencies? I've read that is a problem for women in countries where they're encouraged to cover for religious reasons.

It's probably a good idea what with the UV and all.

SPF 2000?

Limit the sun exposure don't hide from it. It's all natural. The air and water are more harmful and no hiding from them.

I've been seeing more and more of this type of face cover...I'm not sure what to think.

I thought the same thing and on that note, I will just keep my opinions to myself, but I do feel a "WOW" coming on.
