Colorful "koinobori" (carp streamers) stretch across the Sagami River near Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Wednesday for Showa Day, signalling the start of the spring Golden Week holidays in Japan. The string of national holidays ends on "Kodomo no hi" (Children's Day, May 5), a day when families customarily raise the vibrant wind socks to honor children and hope that they will grow up healthy and strong.

I love this tradition so much. Last year was the first time we put our carp streamers up (our lil man will be two years in July) and they made me smile every time I looked out of the window.
