Gas is expensive in Japan, it sells by a liter unit, not a gallon like in U.S.

that's not an oil tanker, its a gas truck. An oil tanker needs water. An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a ship designed for the bulk transport of oil.

A tanker truck (commonly shortened to tanker) is a motor vehicle designed to carry liquefied loads, dry bulk cargo or gases on roads.

Why is transfering something by land called a shipment, and some thing transferred by ship called cargo?

Takuma7,

Relax willya? I think most of us looking at the photo understand what it is, even without the text telling us what it is or isn't.

Yeah gasoline or petrol (in my part of the world) IS expensive here in Japan. Just be thankful we ain't paying the same price as drivers in the UK.

In Tokyo, it's currently about 140 yen per litre X 3.7 = 518 yen per gallon (regular gas), which equals $6.32 per gallon in U.S. currency. Feel sorry for the trucking companies and fisherman.

I am suprised that no one seems to be complaining...the price of petrol seems to go up by around 5 yen a litre every few weeks yet no one says anything....It's not going to be long before we reach the 200yen ltre mark and possibly behond....maybe people will wake up then when it's too late!

As always, an astute observation by asiantourist. He forgot to mention that what Brits call "chips", are called "french fries" in the states.

Good stuff asian-kun. And Did you know that an American gallon is different to a British one?

It seems the person who captioned the photo doesn't.

Yeah, its approaching the price of bottled water! Really, I do understand the trouble higher petrol prices bring, but I still cannot stop being amazed by how stuff pumped from a half-mile underground on the other side of the world, refined and delivered, can still be so relatively cheap.

Those wise wouldn't envy America's cheap gas.

...and still cheaper than milk

If this is an " Oil Tanker ", I wonder what they call a SHIP that carries Oil from the Middle East.

Yeah, the next pic will be the same guy kissing the floor with the hands in the pockets.

It is a surprise again that we all are depending on Middle East's crude oil.

Just when the ETC rates got cheaper

pfft. Prices in Japan is not expensive. When I was growing up in tokyo 20 years ago, it was around 110yen. It's now 25-30% more. At least Japan gets like a 96 Octane fuel as standard. In Australia, 20 years ago, it was 45-50cents a liter and now, it's $1.40. That is a price rise! And it's only 91 OCtane as standard. 95 or 98 Octane stuff is like $1.60.

They jack the prices up before golden week and summer vacation and no one bats an eye.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nope they tend to jack up prices at the end of the financial year mostly.

Which happens to be at the end of this month, check the food and Utility prices going up.

The reason Japan has it cheap is because there are no stealth taxes other than the 5% at the pumps . Europe has a carbon tax included, another tax called fuel charge along with VAT in the price of a litre . It works out about 70% of a litre goes to government revenue in Europe with very little profit to a Gas station operator .

keika1628, what are you talking about? There is a gasoline tax in Japan of 48.6 yen per liter.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nice one, Gurukun at 09:14 !

From the sign on the back of the tanker, it looks like it carries more kerosine than gasoline.

Steller photo. Prize material really.

You'd think a photo with a title like this would actually have the prices in the photo.

funny how the recent price surge for oil is for July delivery yet the prices are going up already. Crooks!!

When you enjoy a cup of coffee at cafe shop or restaurant, if a service person brings a bow containing coffee, you will respond "I don't order this, I have only ordered a cup of coffee." A different container makes your mood change.

This is a strategic sentence to raise more debates as JT's intention to catch readers' minds .... advertisement techniques can do so because more people can recognize something ... For gas prices, Japan is one of dearest places along with Europe and others. the government can promote public transportation by gas tax and other tax and toll fee to persuade people to ride trains, except weekend or special event for residential and private cars.

. For ones information.

1 pound = 16 ounces in UK and USA

1 pint = 16 fluid ounces in USA

1 pint = 20 fluid ounces in UK

8 pints = 1 gallon in UK and USA

1 gallon UK = 1.25 gallons USA

1 gallon UK = 4.546 liters

1 Gallon USA = 3.637 liters

Current UK petrol prices near me is £1.31 per liter

Using exchange rate 14:20 09 March 2011 from

1 liter = £1.31 = 175 Yen = $2.12

1 gallon USA = £4.76 = 637 Yen = $7.71

1 gallon UK = £5.96 = 798 Yen = $9.65 .

Azzprin at 11:30 PM JST - 9th March. 1 gallon USA = £4.76 = 637 Yen = $7.71

If the price of the gas in Japan is 140 yen per litre, the equivelent cost in U.S. gallons, multiply by 3.637 = 514 yen divided by 82 yen per dollar exchange rate = $6.27 per gallon in U.S. How did you get $7.71 per gallon U.S.? Maybe in Pesos?
