A visitor touches a 3M chemical protection suit on a mannequin with dust-proofing goggles and a face mask during the Office Security Expo in Tokyo on Thursday. The 3M offers various types of protection suits and masks including radiation protection ones, which are in high demand after a nuclear power plant was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The stylish Tyvek suits you see on TV are availabe in the USA for as low as $6.95 EACH! I'm thinking about buying a lot, dying them pink and selling them in Harajuku for 50,000 Yen each!

I hope this is not the "cool biz 2011" style?
yafigeev
this is a new Japanese Fashion?
yafigeev
Japan is already available everywhere to wear a mask. You tell the world wear such suits now?

A visitor touching end asked a "lead shield for my eggs to eat?"

This one has a red stripe. Maybe now is a good time to sell these quick, as they normally probably don't have too big a market.
The ones we are seeing on TV all seem to have blue stripes.
Imagine wandering around in the wrong stripes. You'd look a real T what?

If you ask me this 3M chemical protection suit with dust-proofing goggles and a face mask is too cheap for the Japanese market. The Japanese market want higher prices, which means better in Japan. The mask is a 2, 3 asbestos which costs 2500yen. The goggles costs 1500yen. And, the suit, I don't know about 200yen. Way too cheap.

Nice rain-coat for rainy season coming up.

Correction: You know, when you wear ANY radiation suit after radiation exposure, you have to wash yourself with water.
paulinusa
This suit does NOT protect from radiation. It's a CHEMICAL protection suit as stated in the article.
BernieK
Yeah right. You know, when you wear one of these after any radiation exposure, you have to wash yourself with water. Some places in Tohoku still don't have any running water.
cactusJack
You would think that chemical goggles would be air-tight. Those look like cheap wood shop goggles.

Worst. cosplay. ever.
MrDog
Of course some people use them for that.
tokyochris
Aren't the face masks for allergies though?
MrDog
I went to this on Wednesday. It was really good. A lot of nice ladies there too ;)
I think we all know that the Japanese people don't really want real protection when buying something, just the belief that they are being protected. That's why those silly face-masks are still sold. I know some people who wear them every day and still get ill many times a year with colds etc. I've never used one and get a cold once every 2 years at most.

don't forget the boots

wanderlust: Maybe not this particular one but 3M does make protective radiation suits.
Disillusioned
The new Japanese businessmens' uniform. I'll be glad to see the end of black suits.
wanderlust
They do NOT protect you from radiation, only from contamination. Beta and gamma rays,X-rays and neutrons will penetrate this like a hot knife through butter. It's not even a full face suit, so not recommended for hostile chemical environments. Check what US nozzle dam technicians and chemical spill workers wear to see what a real suit looks like. Those filters also lose their effectiveness over time, and need regular changing.

Something tells me these are going to be high fashion this year! Look for "cute" versions soon!

Since three nuclear reactors are now melting down, I ordered 3 of these. If you see me on a train in Yokohama, pinch me to wake me up.
