Rally for Senkakus

Protesters holding Japanese national flags shout slogans in Tokyo's Shibuya district on Saturday. Thousands of people marched to protest China's claims to the disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and Diaoyu in China. The banner, bottom right, reads "We will not allow for the ruling Democratic Party of Japan-led Japanese government to bow to pressure from China."

Marching is useless. Japan will keep on bowing to China, FOREVER...

you will not allow? didnt they already bow to the pressure? seems a bit too late.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, next they will be marching for a free Manchukuo...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

down with centralised-economic roaders!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

is the hippy girl marching in the wrong protest or wearing the wrong clothes...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

More effective to do this in China.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"More effective to do this in China"

They can't do this in China. They can do it here, at least as long as U.S. forces are here.

Will this affect my business dealings with Japan?

Japan has to realize that China is the boss now. No more being the Sick Man of Asia. China can do what she wants, whenever she wants. China controls most of Japan's debt. China will also buy the debts of many European countries.

For 100 years it was the worst time to be Chinese. China's territories were being taken and there was nothing China to do about it except hold rallies. Which is what the Japanese are doing now. The tables have turned indeed.

Look at the positives Japanese people! At least Japan still has better baseballers than China. This guy Ichiro has good skills. Lots of luck too but still don`t think he will break my record

Japanese protest seems peaceful march and they are just protesting the ruling government, not China.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So long as the protesters don't sink to the level of Chinese mobs, this is fine. Non-government induced expression of thoughts is allowed in Japan.

Funny how these stories bring in all sorts of new commenters from China and Korea. They picked up the story on google and signed up to make the world think this is big news.

You know what? This demonstration was not in the news or the morning paper. I googled about it in Japanese, and the biggest story was a story about it not being covered by the media here. It means either the Japanese don't care about the demonstration or the media is taking a lesson from China and not running news that could be controversial.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I watched this yesterday. The hippy girl was one of only a very few women. She was indeed a bizarre addition. It was truly scary to see the hate and anger and pure unalderated stupidity of the demonstrators and to read their signs, hear their crazy chants and see their WW2 flags. Now I can easily see how and why that war started and dragged on. That is why I am scared. The media would have been told not to cover it because the Japanese government is terrified that the Chinese will not lend them money when hey need to beg for it again next month

All protests and still America's protectorate makes Japan a nation with little international influence.

No one cares.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wonder where all their clothes, shoes and flags were made...

China is no in control and I am LOVING IT.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I wonder if these are the same people who protest and want the US bases out of Japan.

I wonder if these are the same people who protest and want the US bases out of Japan

Probably... "Be careful what you wish for" is something people need to think more about

I wonder where their flags were made...

Best comment yet by far

@nimbus. I would almost guarantee it. They are just plain stupid. If they had brains they would be protesting to their own government to start apologizing to China for the atrocities of the first half of the 20th century

It's amazing how thick these fools are. They have no idea how much Japan 'needs' a solid bilateral relationship with China or the amount of economic hurt China can inflict on Japan. This dispute is not about the islands themselves, but about the natural resources to be found in the surrounding oceans, but if Japan continues to abstain on this issue the hardship created by a bad relationship with China with far outweigh any profit from the resources around these two rocks in the 'China' Sea.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Disillusioned.

There are thick people on BOTH sides who post without thinking.

Yeah like China can afford to lose Japan as a Buyer for their products or as an employer for thousands of Chinese in factories, etc and it won't affect their economy and lifes losing one of their biggest clients and business partners/investors.

Look at the rare earth metals, Japan signed contracts with new suppliers already and why do you think China resumed exports. Because the companies were whining we are loosing money and jobs if it the ban continues.

Chinese and Japanese economies are intertwined and BOTH need each other that is the reality.

All this political and nationlistic posturing is just that people puffing up their chests to feel important but at the end of the day everybody still needs a job and earn an income.

People also still want to visit and shop in China and Japan.

@huangyidi

Not only that, but Japan that is a nation that is falling and behind at almost every level at a very alarming rate. If Japan wants to be a major player in the world standing, they need to start with the politicians first. The government is a lame duck do nothing entity that at the moment and the way it looks, in the near future, it will continue to be so in which case, it will just have to accept that there is a new Sheriff in town, like it or not. Japan can huff and puff all it wants, China will just laugh and wave it off like you would an insignificant fly.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

128 million vs. 1.4 billion?

China? How would you like your islands?

...Oh, OK. We thought you might say that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Enough already. Japan has been apologising to China and giving them huge ODA packages in recompense for yonks. Time surely to tell this permanent member of the UNSC, nuclear nation and space-race participant that it's time to start pulling its weight and acting like the major player it wants to be.

From the banner, I'd guess the majority of these sad people are more upset about the DPJ being in power instead of the LDP, than they are about a bunch of gawd-forsaken rocks in the middle of nowhere.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If they had brains they would be protesting to their own government to start apologizing to China for the atrocities of the first half of the 20th century

From the looks of this picture, none of these people were alive to commit atrocities during the first half of the 20th Century. Therefore, they have nothing to apologize for. The same can't be said of the Chinese leadership who, during their youth, rampaged through China beating teachers and other "class enemies" during the Cultural Revolution.

@nimbus

I wonder if these are the same people who protest and want the US bases out of Japan.

You can take that to the bank!

These are the same Flags, Banners, and Posters shipped up from Okinawa, you just have to flip them over, the other side says: "Go Home America!"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China is no(w) in control and I am LOVING IT.

Yes, and what a glorious future we can all look forward to now that china will be calling the shots.

Look back no further than 1989 and the Tiananmen Square massacres (3000 political protestors killed by government forces)for is a glimpse of what the future may hold.

The Chinese government would know how to resolve this kind of "social disturbance" in a major urban center- send in the tanks!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

WMD, you forgot to capitalize Japan ... again.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Land is everything in Asia. The Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans have spilled blood for land. Same goes around the world even in America.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

These guys (and the one or two women) are truly a sad lot. The government has ALREADY bowed to China, and will continue to do so, and what are they going to do about it? They certainly have the right to vote for a different government in the next election (non of use foreign tax-payers do, but that's another issue), but that government will also bow down to China. China is the richer and bigger party of the two, and will be for a long, long time, and Japan needs to accept that and surrender to it. I'm tired of hearing people say, "What happened to Japan?" as though some superior spirit should just exist despite being inferior in many ways and doing nothing to improve the situation. Perhaps this will motivate Japan's youth to do a little more and work a little harder.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Greedy chinese...what else do want from Japan? You provoke Japan by bumping one boat to another. Then youre asking an apology and money for repair. Then become a Chinese hero for what he did. Then you are banning certain products to enter Japan, then you arrest 4 normal japanese that went to a business trip in your country, releasing 3 leaving 1. Now you want the Senkaku Island. Im not Chinese neither Japanese, I just cant accept your attitude towards Japan. As a human being , I do not know what is normal and abnormal for you. This is some kind of propaganda, I bet!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I just wonder do these people really know the real world history especially Japanese history?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

In my opinion, and I'm also neither Japanese or Chinese, this situation is pretty significant in a not too positive way. Nationalism is getting it's way over reason, on both sides. And I think that's what certain parties want. Just checking some other forums, I can't believes the racist, pigheaded insults being thrown around.

People are totally blind to the truth. This is about who get's what. Scared lands and national pride have nothing to do with it. It's about resources. Like almost every war has ever been about.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They are just plain stupid. If they had brains they would be protesting to their own government to start apologizing to China for the atrocities of the first half of the 20th century

If someone had any brains he would stop the endless repetition of the same song. Cleo touched on it, what is conveniently forgotten, because being vile sounds so much better, is the billions in ODA packages for China.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Let's be honest. Why are Chinese upset? They let Europeans take over their country, and then that little country to the East (Japan) walked in and took over. This drove a deep nail into their pride. And what we all know, it wasn't China but Japan who first defeated a western army (Russia), giving hope to all the people of Asia. Japan never let itself be taken over by another country! That is what Chinese don't like. China still feels shame.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I understand that Beijing is in damage control trying to calm down other nations joining to this demonstration. There have been uprising Anti China Gloval movement including France, Britain and other European countries, and of course USA! Watch out China!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

On both sides, nationalism is a smoke screen to hide the truth that each government exploits her own people through taxation and confiscation, etc. Nationalism can be okay, if we are freed from statism, because statism is the evil enemy for us all. But while state is strong, and people tend to count on their government, statism doesn't disappear. Totalitarian states like China are demonstrating the ugliest state of her people. I rather pity those people protesting against Japan. They are the victims of the Chinese totalitarian government.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This demonstration seems to be larger than the anti-Japanese demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. Even the Chinese press (People's Daily) said it was only about 100 people. My impression from what I hear from friends in China is that the public is mostly ignoring the whole issue. The Japanese supermarket Ito Yokado in North Beijing is still crowded, and the Japanese pavillion at the Shanghai Expo still has a waiting time of 6 hours.

Since 1885, surveys of the Senkaku Islands had thoroughly been made by the Government of Japan through the agencies of Okinawa Prefecture and by way of other methods. Through these surveys, it was confirmed that the Senkaku Islands had been uninhabited and showed no trace of having been under the control of China. Based on this confirmation, the Government of Japan made a Cabinet Decision on 14 January 1895 to erect a marker on the Islands to formally incorporate the Senkaku Islands into the territory of Japan. It happened unfortunately in the same year when Japan won Sino Japan war and took over Taiwan, which stimulates Chinese nationalism.

"I'm tired of hearing people say, "What happened to Japan?" as though some superior spirit should just exist despite being inferior in many ways and doing nothing to improve the situation. Perhaps this will motivate Japan's youth to do a little more and work a little harder."

What chu talkin about Willis? I mean Smyth? Since when is this news? Change now? Please. Motivate Japan's youth to do a little more? They'll just continue to blame others ad infinitum, including but not exclusively China, and USA, next Korea then whoever is next up. That's how the consciousness of these people exists from cradle to grave. They have been this way ever since the Senkakus islands existed.

Do you see that strange looking building on the far left of the picture? That is the Humax Building. It houses a Disney Shop on the first floor. It is Chinese owned. Do they know that?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@ isthistheend, I agree, but I'd take it further. Not sure if you'll agree or not. Nationalism is built of the feeling of victimisation. "We've never done anything wrong, we're victims". It's a very ugly thing and these days being bought up all the time. People have the right to curse me if I'm wrong, but I believe both China and Japan play this card.

I have gotten insults and haven't won people over from this view. It's very strong. By the way, America and most other countries have it too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Organized protest in Japan can be a very strange creature. Who knows how many of the "protester" were simply day laborers or freeters? All the flags are the same. Signs look pretty much alike. Who is really behind this march?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This reminds me of all the peaceniks and libs protesting back in '03 to try to stop the Iraq war. People, hippies, antiwar-riors, there's nothing you could do to stop a major power to do what it wants.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

...there's nothing you could do to stop a major power to do what it wants.

Um, that may be true if you live under a totalitarian government, but in a democracy? not so much (thankfully).

That's the main purpose of elections...and peaceful demonstrations.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

One thought I have is, since China controls so much U.S. (and Japanese?) currency, can't any war become an economic one, with China dumping the enemy country's currency? Can't it use this leverage as a horrible tool that no one can go against?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ancient stale tale. Put it back where it came from.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@presto345 We'll put it back when they stop hitting us over the head with the "Japanese killed 30 million Chinese". I wasn't there. How are we supposed to react? Vomit? Hate all Japanese? As someone said above, nationalism is rooted in victimization.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

way to many people have the wrong idea. its NOT Nationalism, most people were not even thinking of this until the inccident. Just like Tibet low & behold It completely STOPPED once the Olympics started & Over. NO talks or protests of it now. this will soon also fade out. North Korea will need the world to focus on them so they'll do something stupid soon.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@mtngal:

Um, that may be true if you live under a totalitarian government, but in a democracy? not so much (thankfully).

Did the protests everywhere stopped the US and the 'coalition' from the shockandawe show in Iraq and Afghanistan? Nope. That just proves my point. China is not the only one doing it. There are a few textbook cases in current news. When a power is rising, it'll feel it can do whatever it wants. And it will. And remember China had a good few milleniums and a couple hundred sh!tty years. They were at the top once before in this part of the world anyways, and they want that spot once again. If only the Japanese had a time machine to go back in time and instead of invading China, they worked with China to kick out the Western imperialists which was the main Chinese goal at that time. Chinese kids would be learning Japanese in school right now and look up to Japan as a great big brother or at least significant and trusted partner instead of learning about Japan as a hated enemy to this day from CCCP sponsored and produced patriotic true historical weekly drama series bs. I know, I live in China and my wife is Japanese. But you know what, what we're talking about here is not even news here. Perhaps I live in the boonies, but still...I think a lot of people are making a big deal about this incident and people in China, the everyday folks anyways, just don't care. It's just a couple slow news week, people. The next major environmental disaster will make all this disappear. So move on, nothing to see here.

A number of posters made the inevitable comments about Japan and WWII. Let's think about that, an Asian country handed unequal treaties, living on the fear and threat of invasion and colonization by far superior forces, humiliated by the west, quickly industrializes and becomes "one" of the world's strong nations. But never really let's go of memory of being humiliated and when economically and militarily strong enough the young officers of the 1930s start influencing overall strategy as well as foreign policy. All this leads to aggression, an agenda to expand her borders and evict any foreign power thatr stands in the way of regional dominance. And we all know how that ended up. This describes China today in 2010.

So I understand that this was the same event as mentioned by Yahoo News on 10/6/10.

And I quote:

"Nationalist groups demonstrated in Tokyo on Saturday against what they saw as a diplomatic defeat for Japan while recent opinion polls have showed support for the prime minister has fallen among the Japanese public over the spat."

Key words here: "Diplomatic defeat for Japan".

Good to know you and Right wing nationalists are on the same page. Like things attract.

very amusing. China is King, japan is the serf of Asia. Better get used to your low position.
