Ramen on the phone

Competitive eater Gal Sone, left and Softbank Mobile commercial star Dante Carver, right, eat ramen in front of comedian Tanoshingo during an event to promote Softbank's Shiratoken ramen campaign. This month, Softbank will give away packages of Shiratoken ramen to the first one million Softbank customers to come into any of their outlets. Tanoshingo joined the event as Shiratoken’s "mascot character."

Gal Sone, she is popular as a competitive eater in Japan's business shows. She holds a bigger bow of ramen compared to the moderate bow Dante Carver does. I love Japanese ramen.

Who is that pretty girl in the middle? :)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ShizukaMonkey.

DON'T ask about the girl in the middle. :p

“mascot character” pretty much sums him up. My students who are "too busy" to do their homework all know how to do the Shingo dance. Not too busy for mind-numbing television.

Looove Gal Sone by the way. Nothing better than a half attractive girl who can smash 52 plates of curry and still be ready to tear up the covers with her fake nails. Probably the realest of all Japanese air-head celebrities.

She does need to go. Everytime she comes on a show, the channel ALWAYS gets changed.

Gal Sone would be better, if they started showing her eating things other than just food.

Hah imagine you dont know gal sone and you take her out on a date. Better take a loan heh.

What's a commercial star?

Moderator: Carver stars in the Softbank Mobile commercials about the White Family.

I love this country partly because it is sometimes so ridiculous.

Can't wait to get back to Japan and gorge on ramen! Good ramen, that is!

What's a commercial star?

It's kind of like a "reality" show star. Only the people themselves believe they are famous or a star.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

i find tanoshingo amusing and more interesting than many of the recent comedians/talentos.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Anyone know how much Softbank paid this ad program?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The only commercial star i really liked was pepsi man.....where is he?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I give Carver a lot of credit for his longevity. Not since the Maytag Repairman has a guy gone years and years and sustained a career solely on a role in a commercial.

tumbledry -- yup they are ridiculous. But I'm not sure, even after 10 years here, if I should laugh or cry about that. I mean does the average J-person understand how silly they are, and just laugh along as well? Or, are they so silly because that's just how dumbed-down things have to be here to get attention?

Carver shows up now and then in "talento" athletic events on TV. I like his character in the white family.

Tanoshingo makes my gorge rise. How anybody got his "Stardom" through a meeting must be a genius.

"I've got a brilliant idea for our next start, now that woman who says 'Goo' has disappeared"

"OK, let's hear it"

"We get a very effeminate homosexual to lie on his back , spread his legs and point to his anus"

"Does he do a cute dance first?"

"He could do"

"Brilliant! Just what we need for when the kids come home from school! Show him in."

"That's what he said".

Tanoshingo - is hilarious !!!!! He's funny !!! The fat black wig guy in the school girl uniform is not funny !!!!

Tanoshingo is Tom Green funny !!!!! or Borat -Saacha Baron Cohen funny !!!!!

Actually the white family is getting toooooo boring. Maybe 2 more years Carver and family have to get a real job. The Dog is boring tooooooooo!!!!!

"Competitive eater Gal Sone" IMAGINE visiting a toilet after she exits. I saw her pile away 50 plates of sirloin steak. Scary !!!!! Does she have a boyfriend ? Does he wear a mask after she goes to the john ????

I don't understand. Does she throw up after eating? What does she do in order not to gain weight?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

dante must be a part time english teacher, eh? i can't believe he could earn enough as a "commercial star" to live well in tokyo.

Otosan should be there interviewing them

bentheredonthat, the "gyara" for one commercial for an amateur is at least 100,000, usually 50 to 100-mon for a pro, millions for a star. Think about how many commercials he's done in the past few years.

I'll echo whiskeysour's comments that this "family" schtick has gotten awfully mundane. The ad people in this country really know how to take a decent idea and run it into the ground. Take the ads for "リポビタン D" - and that whole "FAITO IPPAAATSU" schtick. Did you know that has been the sole theme of every one of their commercials since 1977? (with over 400 different such versions being made as of 2009?) One wonders how many white dogs Softbank will go through...

I wish I was a "celebrity" so when Tanoshingo came close to me with his little act I could beat him senseless.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tanoshingo, enjoy your 15 minutes buddy, your about 7 minutes in- you'll know the shtick has dried up when they do the prime-time tearjerker bio of your repressed, in-the-closet upbringing.

Whiskeysour, I think you've just spent your ration of exclamation points up for the month; I can sell you some of mine if you want.

Who's the 'butch' looking dude in the background?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@haruka, best line of the night !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Seen the CM they refer too. Looks so-so but it does revive an old personality.

As for Tanoshingo, where is my remote.

mass media advertising depravity, dumbed down is an understatement. this mixture of white do, black man, "competitive eater" (now there's a mode of hyper consumerism for ya) and girly boy waiter in drag is an assault on the intelligibility of the average japanese, and the manner in which these portrayals of misfit mismatching, cross-dressing deviance and the like in media spectacles affects children should be studied as much as portrayals of gratuitous violence. i mean, what is softbank's objective here?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@whiskeysour

Thank you for that visual. You're the first poster on here ever, to almost make me consider to never eat ramen, and steak again. LOL

0 ( +0 / -0 )

what is softbank's objective here?

Obviously to sign up more "competitive" eaters, gays and foreigners who like ramen. Makes sense to me...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At first I thought it said "Gall Stone", but maybe that's a tired joke.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can't understand why someone whose "act" consists of pointing to his anus would be selected to promote food.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I just did a google image search and all I found were photos of him making a heart-shape with his hands. He actually "points to his anus?"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The " girl" at the back looks stunning......................

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@whiskeysour - i'm all in favour of personal opinions, but to suggest that Tanoshingo is as funny as Sacha Baron Cohen might be about the craziest thing i've ever read on JT.

Oh never mind, you said Tom Green is funny too. I get it now!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

bicultural - every. Single. Time. He's on TV.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Obviously, bicultural and I do not watch much TV.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That's a very prudent policy to pursue. Sadly, my wife laps this garbage up.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That is one crazy photo. What's up with Tanoshingo's hairstyle? I know it's popular with young guys, but I wish I knew why.

And, binge eating is just icky. Agree with @ubikwit. What's Softbank's schtick with ramen? Anyway, I'm popping into Sb tomorrow to get a package.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Does anyone else think that the white dog icon in the background looks like the pooch is giving the one-finger salute? Sorry, nothing more valuable to add than that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

gaijinstud; Very unlikely as he is not a ladies man.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

he is not a ladies man.

In much the same way as Kilimanjaro isn't underwater...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thanks ivan. Didn't know you watched more J-TV than I did!
