Public relations staff from particle physics organizations around the world are shown what the port in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, is going to look like after it is fully rebuilt following the tsunami of 2011. A dozen personnel visited the Kitakami site in Tohoku, Japan's candidate site for the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) project, this week. The center of the linear particle accelerators used in the ILC would be located in Ichinoseki City in Iwate Prefecture, and Kesennuma on the coast would be used to transport equipment shipped in. Building an expensive facility in a place proven to be vulnerable against tsunami, a common form of natural disaster in Japan. Hmm..why not?

Actually, given the amount of money they are spending on just the sea wall and the population of the city, they could pay everyone in Kesennuma a full time salary for over 50 years. Instead they are just building a concrete wall and giving money to construction companies. Did they tell that to the visitors?

Securing a stable 30-50km length is also important. While not all areas are suitable for establishing the ILC, the Kitakami Highlands are one of the few places in the world with all the ideal conditions for establishing the ILC.

I don't know if this project is right for Tohoku but I do hope industries and jobs do come to the area because they need them to help them recover from the disaster. People are desperate for work.
