Hello, heat island. Not a lot of shade on Japanese streets and sidewalks. And in summer, shade is really needed. Without it, a brutal summer is all the more brutal.

Not a helmet in sight and on the wrong side of the road.

Not at its worst. By having the streets fairly narrow, lots of intersections without traffic lights, cars won't speed, makes it safer than the bigger 2 lanes each way roads for sure.
