Actor Robert Downey Jr meets the press at Club Ex in Shinagawa on Wednesday during a promotional visit for "Iron Man," which opens in Japan on Sept 27. Downey, 43, is having a big year with the phenomenal success of both "Iron Man" and his latest film, "Tropic Thunder." Downey said he signed on for his first real action movie in "Iron Man" because "I got tired of making movies that nobody saw. And I figured that after 25 years of making movies, I was bound to have one good year."

I think Robert Downey Jr. is one of his generation's best actors but why did Japan allow a convicted felon to enter the country? I know the easy answer is money but did they even blink an eye???

This guy was a drug abuser and criminal, however i saw the guy on tv and he seems to have repented. Hopefully he can continue to act in a moral manner, which can inspire youngsters.

More importantly, can someone tell me why this movie is coming out like 6 months after it was released in the US? I've been waiting forever to see it!

shayouzoku - For Japanese subtitling and voice-overs, though I'm not sure if that takes 6 months. Its quite inconsistent though, Spiderman 3 premiered here earlier than any other country, even America. Go figure.
I was lucky enough to catch Iron Man a while back in Singapore and it was a blast. Remember to stay till the end of the credits for a bonus scene.

I have also been waiting like forever to see the movie here! Thanks for the info, Blauereiter.
Buying the DVD from overseas is usually cheaper than watching the movie once in a movie theater in Japan, though.

How did he get into Japan with all his drug history.

He is a bit of an inspiration for drug users. You can recover and go on to do great things.
He's a felon? He doesn't seem dangerous for some reason. He wasn't selling drugs, was he? Just a user, right? I suppose that's not so good as he keeps dealers in business, but still... not a bad guy, really.
I've been waiting forever for "Iron Man" too. Thank god it's finally here.
I can just imagine what he would be like at a party. The guy is so funny. You have to watch him in interviews. They are better than his movies. This one with Val Kilmer is worth a look:

It is an interesting question. I suspect that backround checks for mere tourist visas, if that is what he got, are lax.
But yes, something you peasants of the modern world just do not like to accept is that our society is far from classless. Downey is a VIP. He gets a free pass for many things.
What I want to know is: Did they fingerprint him?

Ironman here looks like he's made out of plastic.

I remember reading somewhere that the movie dates and run lengths are pre-set. So even if a movie is a complete turkey it will play out the contract's length and hog up screen space.
Additionally, the powers that be are leery on releasing block busters too close together as, I believe (and I could be wrong) that there is an overall decline people going to the movies. Yeah, those prices...

Iron Man was a great entertainment movie. Lots of fun. Makes you want to eat hot dogs and join the Marines.

More important is that he should be an example for non-users, showing how hard it is to kick the habit once you do get addicted. His name used to be the butt of all jokes and synonymous with "Junky". Congrats that he finally got clean.

I heard this movie was very good and that Downey was good for the part because of this past. I have yet to see it but I believe my friend.

Iron Man is my favorite movie of the year. Robert Downey Jr is just perfect. Be sure andstay for the credits. The Dark Knight is second but I love me some Iron Man. Strange. Iron Man comes out in the theater in Japan the same week it comes out on DVD in the states.

Tropic Thunder is a howl.
