So where are all the politically correct folks who usually condemn cultural appropriation? You can do this, but not wear a kimono? Too bad that uptight lot doesn't look at how much pleasure is derived from sharing dross-culturally and learning from each other.

American flags are put on literally anything nowadays...
John Stantcheff
Very funny - brazil tradition with japan color. I like this brave dancers in the rain. ;)

"I really don't think any country's flag should be made into clothing... even less a 'bikini'..."
@FightingViking
And I will express the opposite opinion. Have fun with it. Do whatever. Down with nationalism! Up with Samba!

Luca,
Only if worn by an Yvonne or Siobhán?

@DenTok2009
Unfortunately, I fear it would just look like "the wrong time of the month".
But I'm sure it's been done. Japan's not that uptight at all as these women prove.

Yankee.
"Yankie knickers" conjures up an unfortunate image..... ; )
SenseNotSoCommon
The lady in picture 4 better not make a kayak out of those yellow feathers...
lucabrasi
Lovely-looking lady and all power to her.
But those Yankie knickers are just wrong....

Hinomaru bikini would be full of win!
Tamarama
Magnificent!!! Festival, fun, joy de vivre.
souka
hope the event is not for the kids.

Forgot his camera, didn't he? Now he'll have to rely on his memory when he gets home.

I'm wondering how the stuff on her crotch is not falling.
nath
Treating the human body as if there is something wrong with seeing it is more harmful to society than seeing a little flesh.
Jimizo
'Agree with FightingViking; wonder whether anyone would put on a hinomaru bikini...'
The design of the hinomaru may not be entirely appropriate for a bikini top.

Pukey2:
Good grief pukey, what family values and civilized society are you talking about? Saudi Arabia perhaps? I am happy that girls here can celebrate and show their beauty, without some bleak morality police showing up.
And Japanese families are largely more intact that in most other countries, thank you very much.
Kabukilover
Sure beats the Support for Abe photo.

Beautiful! Looks fun.
@Fighting Viking, I don't mean to bother you but could you explain your problem? I really don't get it.

Not even on the 4th? I think it's a matter of self-respect. I dislike also cosplay when it becomes only a pretext to flaunt"your assets" (honestly I dislike cosplay in general, despite my big interest in manga and anime).
Paustovsky
There is nothing negative that could possibly be said about these photos.
curlygene
Samba originated in the U.S. , eh? Of course this photo may have been of the 1% of dancers not dressed in traditional Brazilian same get up, but I stand by my second sentence nonetheless. It's true no matter the situation!
Pukey2
This brazen display of flesh is absolutely disgusting. Bits and pieces hanging out for children to see. This could be detrimental to family values and a civilized society. People scantily dressed in bright, gaudy colours, strutting their stuff. Lord have mercy. Where the heck are the god-fearing people? Oh wait, I'm confusing this with a price event. That's ok then. Carry on. No wonder there are few objections from the posters. I just hope gay men don't have the gall to do this.

@Strangerland
I don't care WHERE they sell them, I still think it's wrong...

Shawing!

Some women have no shame, uh?

@CGB Spender
I wouldnt say unhappy but more like extreme "pervy" focus. I have unfortunately seen men here at full nude and topless cabarets that would sit in front of everyone not considering the other customer's view. With their arms folded in seiza with the same look, they would just sit there with this kind of obsession that could easily turn into anger and even worse.
Those are the ones if I was woman would be careful of. We all have read about obsessions here turning into tragedy for some poor woman or child.
Overall, the event is fun, but it never lives up to the ones in The Americas and Caribbean.
smithinjapan
The Photo of the Day is the best of the bunch, in terms of smile and giving off an aura of enjoyment and fun. Shame the weather is not all the great today, but everyone (indeed except the guy in the last picture who seems to have jumped in the road) looks like they are having a good time. Not sure what role the robots play in it, but still fun.
Noble713
Yeah, I'll take these over the conservatively-dressed eisa dancers for Obon any day.
nath
They sell those in the US. I've seen them.
FightingViking

Wow, J-girls can really samba! Stunning!
My, someone went really thoroughly through the pics!

It seems to be getting scantier every year..

Yowza! Fantastic! Superb!

Last photo guy wants to get a close-up experience. But he doesn't look too happy.
