They say most men can only detect a handful of emotions from expressions. But I see "apprehension", not just simple fear.

Another common male trait is to think a person can feel only one emotion at a time, this despite their own self feeling many at one time. I would say these girls are feeling apprehension as well as the pleasure that comes in receiving attention, both at the same time.

Maybe one of the ladies can help me out here?

I think they are shy and uncomfortable to be with unkknown and foreign Santa too. But at least these kids smile which is nice! Some kids cry when they see me :(

Would it be shallow to say that I love Santa? :) Santa please come to me too with many presents! I will smile more cheerfully than these kids!

Sorry American Mike! Christmas is a Christian tradition celebrating the birth of Jesus. Last time I checked, Japan was not a Christian nation. It would be the same as American people celebrating 'O bon'.

On a serious note, it makes me sad that Japan has to copy the commercial side of what was traditionally a religious holiday.

Tommy Lee Jones found out Santa exists when he flew up to that kid's apartment to give him a present and found Santa standing on the veranda right after he'd put a present next to the kid's bed ( guess they didn't have a tree to put it under ). Santa didn't hang around to talk, though, ha ha ha!

Who cares about Japanese traditions. Santa isn't hurting anyone. Look at the smiles on these little girls. Christmas makes the kids happy. Isn't that a good thing? In the end they will still get their little envelopes of cash on 1/1 and get to eat that nasty 御節料理.

I agree, combinibento. I think it's great that Christmas is really taking off here, it is a festival us gaijin can relate to and share with the locals, along with New Year's. Let's face it, us gaijin can't really get into the o-bon festivities! I am hoping Easter will take off in the next 5 or so years too - but that could take a while.

My mistake. Everyone here seems a little 'slow'. Those of you who aren't American and have been to or live in Japan, can see just how much the Japanese try to copy America. The point of christmas, was simply another example. Not trying to say America is the only country that celebrates christmas.

Every nation in the world with an economy celebrates, or at least knows Christmas is the time to give gifts.

And well, sorry to burst everyone's bubble here, but Christmas is not a Christian festival. Just like cheesy Valentine's Day, it's an "economic stimulus" (thanks for the term, President Obama!) activity passed off as a religious tradition. Imagine, that's 1 billion captive consumers, and the rest of the world joining in!

When I was young one my mother noted I was really teriffied of said Santa Clause so no more Santa Clause frights to me from then on.

Wrong. I'm sure you and your family associate Christmas with Christianity, but not everyone. For some, it's simply a time for celebrating with family, giving gifts, sharing time with loved ones. Simple logic dictates that only a small % of the planets popluation that celebrates Christmas actually associate it with Christianity. Look up the real history of Christmas on google.
