I wonder what class warship this is. It looks pretty well armed with as far as I can tell 3 CIWS, and a torpedo launcher, and probably more of both on the other side. Can’t tell if it has vertical tubes or helipad though...

Neve mind. I Wiki’d it. It’s a budget-conscious Asagiri class.

No money for the own citizens, but unlimited money for anything useless else. Unbelievable.

How is this "self-defense"?

Protecting Japan-owned vessels and/or cargo from pirates.

Queue up the PRC bots complaining about anything Japan and a military. People actually questioning what such ships could be used for need only look at the navy red China is fielding currently for all the answers you seek.

The money being spent for this mission is to protect Japanese owned and flagged vessels that use that waterway. It is very much money spent for it's citizens.

How is this "self-defense"?

How is protecting yourself not self defense?

Japan is a global trader. It trades with nations all over the world. Japan is one nation among many that provide protection against pirates in that area, and that group of nations includes China. All nations that partake do so to secure global trade. Condemn Japan and you also condemn China and every other country that provides warships for everyone's protection.

Didn't know Piracy still happening these days!

Piracy, either for the purpose of ransom for hostages or to sell goods on the black market reached a peak during e late 90’s, particularly in the Gulf of Aden and Malaka Straits, and is probably more common today than in ye olde tymes.
