In this train advertisement, actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who played the lead role of Toranaga in last year's Emmy award-winning TV miniseries "Shogun," endorses "The Bitter-ist," a new variety of Asahi beer launched on April 15.

One of the very few Japanese actors who can actually act.

Actually there are many actors who can act. As there are many who can't. But you need to be totally fluent in Japanese with no need for subtitles to appreciate them in dramas and movies. I've watched Sanada since he was under Chiba in the JAC and he really became a serious actor after he went to London. He used to say that he wanted to become "the world's Mifune" and I'd say he has achieved that.

I tried one yesterday, it really is very bitter. At first taste I thought it was Ok but by the end of the can ... a solid meh.

Why can't japanese beer makers make beers in proper styles? They don't make pale ale, bitter, stout and so on, but insist on this kind of "The bitter", "The rich" and other kinds of psuedo labels.

Thanks, Kipling, I like mildly bitter pale ale, but the way you describe it sort of dissuades me from trying it.

Kirin beer is the best..

So many beers....so little time...

Give it a try, a different taste to all the other generic rice lagers available in Japan. Very bitter with what I thought was a slightly unpleasant "chemical" aftertaste. I'll give it another go if they don't discontinue the line in the next few weeks as often happens to "new" beers.

If you want a real bitter beer, you cant go past "Victoria Bitter", or VB as its called locally. Brewed in Victoria, Australia.

Some of them actually try, though. Kirin now has a sour, some have a white beer, there are some stout being made, etc...
Naming is the problem, they could use this opportunity to educate the consumer. The vast majority thinks beer = bitter alcoholic drink, and that's why they name it using adjectives.
And so we have a loop: bad naming - consumer with poor knowledge - bad naming so they can understand...

My opinion is that Japan, like Mexico, makes some wonderful beers. Kirin and Asahi dark are my favorites. Am willing to try this new one, at least once.
Everyone has slightly different taste buds, so each beer tastes slightly different to each person. That said, I think the high level of quality used in the making of Japanese (and Mexican) beers makes them stand out. In general everything made in Japan is made to high standards of quality.

I once heard this joke from an Egyptian.
Apparently Pyramid, Cairo's local brand of beer was suffering from quality control problems. Some batches were sour, some bitter, some flat. The brewery decided to send a sample to a laboratory to find out what was causing the problem.
Two days later, brewery staff went to the laboratory to get the results. They were met by a man in a white coat, who shook his head sadly and informed them, "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your camel has diabetes."
