Sinkhole in Hakata

A huge sinkhole is seen on a street in Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Tuesday morning. Police said the road caved in at around 5:15 a.m. about 100 meters from JR Hakata Station, causing blackouts and traffic delays. No injuries were reported. Officials said the cave-in may be linked to construction work for the Nanakuma subway line. The Bank of Fukuoka also reported that its online systems had suffered a glitch, possibly due to the cave-in.

Sjeesh thats not a sinkhole that's a crater. Doesn't anyone check the soil from time to time?

It looks like the sinkhole has also caused repetition!

They were just showing this on the news. Some lady caught video of it shortly after it had opened up, while it was still collapsing into itself - big pieces of street falling into the hole etc. Pretty crazy stuff.

That must be some scary stuff to see happening.

Wow, they are showing it on the news now, it's got to be about 8-10 meters deep! It's huge!

Every time I see one of these, it seems like it's photo-shopped. That's pretty crazy. I'm curious how these sinkholes happen and what can be done to prevent them.

They were tunneling for a new subway line under that road. Something obviously didn't go according to plan.

Saving costs, cutting corners....

Its weird though, I see only a small tunnel but nothing that resembles being worked on a new subway line.

The working underground opened a cavity or a broken water line washed away the lose soil, i think, glad that no one fell in

Apparently the subway construction was not right there, but in a different location, but they think that something in the construction caused this issue (maybe they broke a water main or something?)

Lucky it happened when it did. 3 or 4 hours later could have cost some lives.

Wow, they just said it's 20 meters deep! I wasn't realizing that it's half filled with water when I guessed earlier.

No one has been hurt.

I used to live in Fukuoka and have ridden my bike over that exact spot on numerous occasions, its right between Hakata Station and Canal City. Hope nobody fell in.

ATMs at Fukuoka Bank have been knocked offline because of this.

Wow. There is also an underground walkway beside that area where people can lock up their bikes and it's also near the underground shopping area. Crazy!

Thank the gods no one was hurt. That is a pretty massive hole. Seems like in this case it was man made, indirectly at least.
