On March 11, 2011, the biggest earthquake to hit Japan on record triggered a massive tsunami that devastated parts of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, sweeping away everything in its path, including houses, ships, cars and causing a meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. More than 15,000 people died and around 2,500 remain missing. Hundreds of thousands of people were also displaced due to the disaster. In the photo above, officials in protective gear check for signs of radiation on children from an evacuated area near the Fukushima nuclear plant. The photos below recall the horrific scenes that followed the disaster.

Rest in peace to all of the folks lost in both the earthquake and ensuing tsunami. May their surviving family members and other loved ones be comforted in their sorrow. It is amazing that so many remain unaccounted for. The Japanese have got to be the most resilient people on the planet. Ganbarre, Nippon ! Ganbarre, Fukushima !

We never 3.11 six years ago. A natural disaster strikes when people lose their memory of the previous one.

I was in northern part of Tokyo when I had a big shake not felt before. Yes, I still remember vividly that nearly all of my books fell off the bookshelf even in my area. And I realized how serious the seismic damages in Tohoku areas. Among others, radioactive damages have been very troubling. I express my sympathy for all of the victims.

Poor kids, facing that situation, and later on thyroid cancers, so some fat cats can cash more money...

The aftermath must have been extremely traumatic for the kids. And, six years later, they are still traumatised by not being able to return home and being bullied by fellow students and teachers. It's a,ways the kids that suffer the most in any disaster, but they are the ones who receive the least assistance. Adults get over very quickly, but kids do not.
